‘Bad Man of Will Please

Brimstone’ Beery Fans;

Lyric Act Recommended

O'Keefe, Bruce, Calleia Give Good Support In Western Film.

“Trigger” Bill, “The Bad Man of Brimstone” who is strutting across the screen at Loew's this week, is just a great big naughty boy—or so his literary progenitors would have vou believe. For in this rootin’, tootin’, “head-‘em-off-at-Eagle-Pass” horse opera “Trigger” manages to “plug” about 15 of his best friends, but “aw, gee whiz, he was only funnin’, fellas.” Just playing around. You know how it is on dull Sunday afternoons—. Well, “Trigger,” as personified by Wallace Beery, certainly does something with his spare time. You see, he's the town's leading stick-up man and inasmuch as Brimstone is located in the heart of the silver mining country and growing rapidly, Rill has to be on his toes to keep up with it. He's really doing a splendid job of it until his long lost son, Jeff, turns up.

O'Keefe in Lead

Jeff, played by Dennis O'Keefe, has been ~rought up with a more orthodox way of looking at things. It doesn’t take the girl in the case long to persuade him to remain in Brimstone, and then practically no time at all to join the forces of law and order. The turnabout school of fair play is inaucurated and things begin to look black for the “Bad Man” and his boys. It then appears that “Trigger” is only a sunny-side-up bad egg after all. He's got sentiment. Knowing that Jeff despises him, he doesn’t want Jeff to know that he's Jeff's father and he wants the boy to be a success as the U. S. Marshal. But, as yet, Bill doesn’t hanker for “he rocking chair, either. Something has to give—somewhere. During the crucial clash between “the boys” and Jeff, the former find out just who Jeff is. They think that if they tell him he'll not be so sassy. But Bill can't have that and he's ready to “go to shootin’ ” over it. Which he promptly does, wiping out the entire gang. His last shot, however, is fired outside his son's jurisdiction and the jig is up. Bill is led away during Jefl's wedding as a job for the hangman. Wallace Beery plays “Trigger” to perfection. But then, he should, for he's been playing “Trigger” under a half dozen different names ever since he and Raymond Hatton ran

out of titles as a team Some years |

ago. This is not, however, to Mr. Beery's discredit. He has always been very funny and in “Bad Man” he is at his best. If you're a Beery fan, you won't want to miss him in this. ‘ New Actor Convincing

Dennis O'Keefe, the Jeff of the piece, turns in a convincing performance. He has been glowingly described as the current hope of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and it is <aid that, on the strength of his showing in “Bad Man,” some great things are in store for him. That has a ring of plausibility to it, inasmuch as he has been assigned one of the three top roles here. Something must be said, too, for Virginia Bruce and Josaph Calleia. Miss Bruce, with the aid of the script writers, gives the part of the girl of the golden West a new and refreshing interpretation. Mr. Calleia is excellent as “Portugee Ben,” “Triggers” side kick. His performance is reminiscent of the title character in the play, “The Bad Man,” and, as you may remember, that was one grand character.

“Nop Time to Marry,” the second feature of the program, is a dramatization of a recent story by Paul Gallico. It concerns the romance ot two newspaper people. They enjoy a difficult time getting married and,

although the picture is badly paced, |

you'll probably enjoy their antics as much as they seem to. Lionel Stander provides much of the merL. E. H.

riment.

Boy Foy, Juggler, Clicks

In '3 Stooges’ Stage Presentation.

| There is a 17-year-old Scottish lad at the Lyric this week presenting {one of the most skilful, unusual and | entertaining vaudeville ‘acts ever |seen here. His name, at least for professional purposes, is Boy Foy. We've seen plenty of adroit jugglers, and plenty of gentlemen with an uncanny sense of balance who ride those precarious contraptions xnown as unicycles. Boy Foy, howover. combines these two difficult stunts. One needs to see the resuit to believe it. He climaxes his act on a ‘cycle that puts him about 15 feet above the stage, balancing rubber balls on paper disks on his chin and forehead, and juggling four plates for good measure. Before that he has done all manner of platter spinning, balancing, juggling and trick riding.

Refreshing Entertainment

Here's something new and refreshing for a jaded public appetite that's fed up on threadbare radio wisecracks. My urgent advice is to see this young man. There are other enjoyable features on the Lyric stage bili as well. And the theater is presenting the halfhour Government film called “The River,” a highly unusual and worthwhile picture which has been re{viewed here previously and recom- . mended strongly. | The stage-show's headliners are |the Three Stooges of film and {vaudeville fame. Doubtless you are { familiar with their slapstick antics already. They're still amusing— | especially in their “dramatic sketch.” | Eddie Laughton is the straight man | assisting them. Sara Ann McCabe, radio soprano, |is present on the bill, displaying la good voice and the ability to | put over a Song. Among other | things she sings the familiar color- | atura. warhorse, “The Wren,” with | “swing” accompaniment by the or- | chestra. She uses the same arrange- | ment employed by Josephine Tum- | minia and Jimmy Dorsey's orches- | tra, which you may have heard on | Bing Crosby's radio program or in la recording. It's still a clever | stunt. Bell's “Hawaiian Follies” are back {again at the Lyric, with some new | songs. Their act seems to have less Polynesian characteristics each season, and their “Hawaiian warsong” sounded more like something by Cab Calloway than native music indigenous to the Pacific Paradise. The best performer is still Baby Joy, the cute little youngster who sings and dances. As its feature screen attraction, the Lyric has “Change of Heart,” a comedy about bad tempers, matrimonial difficuities and the curative properties of golf. Gloria Stuart, Michael Whalen and Lyle Talbot are featured. J. T.

Another muscled and inarticulate Tarzan, the ninth of the cinema family, is stalking the screen again at the Apollo. He is Glenn Morris, Olympic decathlon champion, and the object of his affections is Eleanor Holm, erstwhile Olympic swimmer. Since all Tarzan pictures are as alike as Westerns, the plot need not detain us. There are the usual safaris, animals, rescues from natives, vine-swingings and swimming parties with crocodiles in pursuit. Mr. Morris displays his athletic prowess to advantage. Miss Holm swims her vaunted and beautiful backstroke, and responds to Tarzan's

monosyllabic wooing in a soft Brooklyn accent. This is not one of the best Edgar Rice Burroughs film translations. Acting, settings and direction are decidedly second-rate. George Barbier and Hedda Hopper head the supporting cast. The Apollo's second picture is called “Sh, the Octopus.” It is based on a detective's dream. Since most dreams are senseless, this picture rings true. It is probably the most pointless, mixed-up effort of the season. Hugh Herbert heads the cast, and Allen Jenkins lends support. But the richly gifted Mr. Herbert hasn't a chance, nor has the picture. J

Schaefer Is Symphony's Guest Star

Founder of Orchestra Returns to Lead Concert.

By JAMES THRASHER Greeted by long and lusty applause and a profusion of flowers, Ferdinand Schaefer, venerable, sil-ver-haired founder of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, returned to the Murat stage yesterday to lead his former charges and their new. associates in a guest appearance, It was a happy occasion, one of good feeling and warm sentiment. As Mr. Schaefer made his first appearance the orchestra rose to greet him. That the audience did not follow suit seems rather regrettable. But they hailed him with prolonged clapping. The concert opened with the Brahms D Major Symphony, and at its close, Mr. Schaefer was recalled four times. Another ovation and four huge baskets of flowers greeted him at the close of his Introduction and Scherzo for String Orchestra, composed last fall and played for the first time yesterday. As soloist, Frank Sheridan, the noted American pianist, was heard in th® Liszt E Flat Concerto. Mr. Sheridan proved himself to be a sensitive and well-equipped pianist. But his choice of a concerto did not seem particularly congenial. His interpretation had a complete lack of the brilliance which is this composition’s warp and woof.

Rebels Against Bombast

Evidently Mr. Sheridan has repelled against the bombast with which the concerto usually is delivered. But if so, the rebellion was one of passive resistance. One realized why Liszt's composition has been called the “triangle concerto.” For our enterprising Mr. Buchanan of the percussion section rather stole the show. Yet Mr. Sheridan is an excellent pianist. His technique is fluent and sure; his tone is rich and songful. And he even invested the dime-a-dozen second theme of the concertos first movement with something that approached dignity and meaning.

There is little doubt that with Mo-

Keith's to Have New Stage Policy

A policy of vaudeville and feature pictures is to be inaugurated at Keith's next Friday, with Charley Ball as the new house manager. Mr, Ball’s appointment was announced today by Carl Niesse, general manager of the Central City Amusements Co., Keith's new operator. Mr. Ball is well known in the local entertainment field, and has

zart or Beethoven as a vehicle, Mr. Sheridan would have ridden to a triumph. As it was, the audience received his playing most cordially. The rest of the program included the Overture to Humperdineck's «Hansel and Gretel,” and Liszt's First Rhapsody for Orchestra, which also exists as the Rhapsody No. 14 for piano, and the Hungarian Fantasy for piano and orchestra. Throughout, the orchestra gave Mr. Schaefer close attention, sympathetic co-operation and a display of its best efforts. Mr, Schaefer, again dispensing with the scores, conducted with a vigor and devotion to the music that the passing years fail to dim. The program will be repeated this evening at 8:30 o'clock.
