Good Radio Music

By JAMES THRASHER

Purists may quarrel with the musical worth of many items on Arturo Toscanini’s programs, but the maestro’s results are such as to quiet most

of the opposition.

For many seasons Il Re Arturo has delighted audiences freshness and vitality of such things as exhumed Rossini overtures and | other cobwebbed relics of a rococo era. And tonight he is to continue | this quite delightful practice with the playing of the curtain-raiser to Rossini’s “La Scala di Seta” (The Silken Stairs”) and the Paganini “Moto

with the

Perpetuo,” Opus 11. The Rossini overture is to an opera whose ridiculous libretto foredoomed it to failure. In fact, the composer is said to have written the music to chastise the literary upstart who submitted the fantastic effusion. Therefore he included in the overture such burlesque effects as solo passages for drums and cymbals, directions for the fiddlers to tap their bows on chairs and instruments, and other odd tricks.

The “Moto Perpetuo” is one of those tour de force violin solos which is a handful for the average recital ist. With only such an orchestra as he NBC Symphony would a conduc tor dare entrust the solo part to 24 violinists, which is what will happen tonight.

We have spen lene

too much time on eu. So

there’s only time to say that the more substantial offerings will include Schumann's Third (“Rhenish”) Smyphony, and Ravel's orchestration of the “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Mussorgsky. WIRE will carry the NBC broadcast beginning at 9 o'clock.

” » » Georges Enesco has had a bit of program trouble during his three | weeks of guest conducting the New York Philharmonic-Symphony. Two weeks ago, one of his countrymen’s scores failed to arrive. For mor | row’s program another change has been made, due to a copyist’s mistakes. Mr. Enesco planned to cone duct one of his new compositions, the Suite No. 3 in D Major, subtitled “Villageoise,” which he com-

The fight is scheduled to go 12 rounds, The contest will take place in mammoth Hanseatenhalle Stadium and is one of the first important bouts to be held in Germany in many years,

¥ ov % Dr. W. B. Townsend, Butler Unis versity professor of education, will be heard tomorrow from the NBC affilliate station in Chicago, speak= ing over the NBC-Red network on “Social Relationships of High School Boys and Girls.” The broadcast is scheduled for 2 p. m. Dr. Townsend was asked to speak to the national audience following his recent statement to the press in which he recommended that high school girls and boys should have different ‘‘dates” each night. He claims to have been misquoted and plans to take this opportunity to correct all false impressions of his beliefs and to elaborate on his views of social relationships.

” o o An attempt will be made by radio to find the heirs to an unclaimed estate of $6000 left by an Indiana politician on the “Court of Missing Heirs” broadcast over CBS tomorrow hight at 9:30 o'clock. Clews to the missing heirs point to the territory around Indianapolis and Fowler, Tnd.; Mount Vernon, S. D., and Omaha, Neb, The estate was left by one Bernard Rowan who died at Otter bein, Benton County, Ind. Feb, 1936.

” ” » Eve Curie, daughter of the fam= ous woman scientist and author of the best selling biography of her mother, “Madame Curie,” will listen to a special rebroadcast to France of the “Columbia Workshop's” dramatization of the book on the day following the presentation to American listeners over CBSWFBM tonight at 7 o'clock. A spe= cial recording will be made and short-waved tomorrow at 1 p. m, to Europe where the younger Curie will pick it up.

found that several of the parts had been miscopied. There was no time to remedy the discrepancies, so we shall hear, instead, Dvorak's “New World” symphony. The other program numbers will be Mendelssohn's “Italian” Syms= phony, and Sibelius’ tone poem, “The Swan of Tuonela.” This is Mr. Enesco’s final guest appearance with the New York orchestra this season. John Barbirolli is to be back for next week's concert. There is a floating rumor that Mr. Enesco may conduct the Cleveland orchestra next season, and that Artur Rosdzinski may replace Mr. Barbirolli in New York. However, the story is just one of those things. Salt well before taking.
