BANDITS HOLD UP 2 LIQUOR STORES AND PHARMACIST
Clerk Forced to Lie on Floor; Suspect, 19, Is Grilled in Purse Snatching.
Holdups at two liquor stores and a drugstore, robbery of a taxicab driver, and another man in his Oliver Ave. home, and a purse snatching netted bandits more than $100 last night, police reports showed today. A bandit took about $50 in a holdup at the Shelby Liquor Store, 1847 Shelby St. Steve Tiley, 27, of 1503 N. Pennsylvania St. clerk in the store, operated by Frank Greenwald, told police he was forced to lie on the floor as the robber fled. As 8 bandit ran from a liquor store at 169 E. 25th St., after robbing it of $20, the owner, Mike Houles, 49, hurled a bottle of soda water at him.
Orders Cigarets
A man entered a drugstore at 822 W. Michigan St., ordered a package of cigarets and then held up J. E. Russell, 46, of 410 W. 38th St.,
who said he was unable to determine the amount of money taken. Mitchell Tungate, 21, of 110 S. Rural St. told police he was driving his taxicab in the 900 block Fayette St, when his passenger drew a gun, robbed him of $4 and fled. Police today questioned a 19-year-old suspect after Mrs. M. E. Greer, 65, of 1718 Ruckle St, said he grabbed her purse containing $3.50 as she was walking in the 1500 block Broadway. Deputy sheriffs, called to the home of Robert DeLong, 47, of 3847 Oliver Ave. found him lying unconscious, apparently the victim of an attack by two men who stole his pocketbook containing $25.30.
Suffered Head Injuries
Mr. Delong suffered a head injnury and a cut on ‘the face. After he was revived, he told deputy sheriffs he was sitting in his front room counting his money when he heard a knock on the front door. When he opened it, he ‘was grabbed by two men who beat him and took his pocketbook, he said. His two children, William, 12, and Goldie, 9, told deputies they found their father dazed and called neighbors.
PRESENT FARM POLICY LAUDED
Increased Income Termed Greatest Stabilizer In Country.
Times Special DELPHI, Ind. Jan. 28.—Defending New Deal agricultural policies, Governor Townsend today had declared that “increased farm income has become one of the greatest stabilizing forces in the country’s economic life.” “Indiana farm income during the first 11 months of 1937 was $266. 171,000, an increase of $24 779,000 over the corresponding period of the preceding year,” the Governor said in an address here last night. “Those of us who have labored on farms know how the New Deal program has rescued us from debt and has stopped the vicious exploi- | tation of land that threatened to | destroy the fertility of the soil.”
