RETAIL SALES DIP LESS HERE THAN IN STATE

Indianapolis Business Off 5.2 Percent, Compared To Average of 10.

Times Special WASHINGTON, Jan. 28—Although Indiana retail sales dropped 10 per cent in December, 1937, compared with the same month in 1936, Indianapolis sales fell only 52 per cent, the Department of Commerce reported today. In addition, December sales here were 443 per cent greater than in November, 1937. The report reveals 66 independent retail stores grossed $2,739,700 in Dacember, $1,898.200 in November and $2.888.700 in December, 1936. Greatest loss for December, 1937, compared with December, 1936, was Gary with 37 per cent. Ft. Wayne reported the least among cities over 100,000 with but 1.7 per cent decrease. Evansville dropped 15.1 per cent; South Bend, 17.6; Terre Haute, 16.4; Michigan City, 84, and Richmond, 268. Muncie, in the 25000 to 50.000 classification, reported but eight-tenths of one per cent decline. Groceries Show Gain

Average decline for cities from 10,000 to 25.000 was 13.2 per cent; 5000 to 10,000, 6.8; 2500 to 5000, 4.5, and 2500 or less, 104. Combination grocery and meat businesses and the grocery business were the only ones reporting increases over December, 1936. Combinations increased business 1.1 per cent and groceries alone .5 per cent. Percentage of declines by businesses was reported as follows: Department stores, 4; drug stores, 1.6; country general stores, 2.7: restaurants, 3.6; jewelry, 4.7; shoes, 9.6; hardware, 11.1; men’s and boys’ clothing, 13.8; women’s specialty shops, 20.2; furniture, 26.2; lumber and building materials, 31.7, and motor vehicle dealers, 49.2.

Dr. Frederick D. Kershner, Butler University School of Religion dean, was reported in a critical condition today at Methodist Hospital. He entered the hospital on Nov. 15 for a major operation and later suffered a relapse. His son, Frederick D. Kershner Jr, was called home yesterday from the University of Wisconsin where he is a student.
