Sonja’s New Film Well Presented

Plot Plausible, and There Are Some Nice Tunes, Much Comedy.

Sonja Henie, the Norse nymph, flashes across the Indiana screen this ‘week in one of the most glittering spectacles of her short cgreer. “Happy Landing” is satisfyifig to a degree that could be topped only by the appearance of Miss Henie in person. It would appear that Miss Henie is the ‘only film actress—if she can be called such—who could hold an audience's attention for something more than anh hour almost without the aid of story and acting ability. Virtuosity itself is usually like all whipped cream and no pastry. Happily, this is not the case in this film. Even without her the picture ‘would be good, with plenty of comedy, some excellent new tunes, and a large dose of satisfying satire on ‘publicity -hungry celebrities. The ribbing handed Harry Richman on his famous ping pong ball flight is dampened only by the fact that it comes rather late.

Hero Starts Flight

Duke Sargent, ‘played by Cesar Romero, is a well-known orchestra leader ‘who is popular ‘with his feminine admirers. As the picture opens Duke and Jimmy, his manager (Don Ameche), are about to hop off for Paris. At the last moment, as usual, Duke has been detained by a lady named Flo (Ethel Merman). The manager comes to the rescue just in time. But a storm interrupts their plans, blowing them several hundred miles off their course and forcing them to land hear a tiny Norwegian village. Enter Trudi (Miss Henie), a girl ‘who has refused all the local boys because of a dream about a handsome prince coming to take her away. An impulsive man and an anxious maid—enter trouble,

Enter ‘Complications

Trudi imagines that Duke has |

proposed to her and she accepts him. Theh, while she is skating in the ‘village carnival, Duke's manager hears the story, goes into &action ‘and saves his employer once again, But Trudi is not to be discouraged. She fancies herself ‘in love ahd, blaming her broken romance on Jimmy, she follows the pair to New York. By this time Duke is having Mertsa trouble again and Trudi realizes her position. She makes up with Jimmy, he presently discovers her skill on ice, and they go into partnership. From there oh, “Happy Landing” {s ah old, old story. Tt takes Trudi several reels to find out where her affections really lie. However, they are hot ‘wasted reels. Miss Henie works her heart problem out on skates, and you'll probably never know ‘what was going on. Better Than Before Miss Henie's ice ballets are superb ~peautifully staged and executed. She is even better than in her previous ‘efforts, especially in the first number, “Snow Maiden.” The entire cast cannot be comtended too highly for its ‘work. Cesar Romero is outstanding as Duke. You'll enjoy Don Ameche, playing it “straight.” Ethel Merman inh one very amusing number; Al Mahoney, & new comic; a brief appearance by Sheezer Billy ‘Gilbert; the Condos Brothers; the Raymond Scott ‘Quintet, and the return of El Brendel, dB. MAE WEST DENIES | RADIO VULGARITY

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 28 (U. P) — Mae West shrugged her shoulder in disdain for the National Broadcasting ‘Co. today and accused its executives of impolite, disrespectful, ungentlemanly and ungracious conduct for leaving a lady in the lurch. “They were no gentlemen,” she said. “They ley a lady down.”

Fact ‘was, Miss West continued, there ‘was nothing wrong with her recent broadcast which aroused SO much ‘controversy. “I khow ‘what is vulgar and what isn't. I ‘hever have been vulgar on the stage, screen or radio. 1 just make fun of vulgarity, but people | seen to insist oh getting me wrong.” |

‘Bank-Nite’ Is Defended

Lottery Hearing Held by Postoffice Aid.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 (U. P). —Pmmet Thurmon, general eounsel for Affiliated Enterprises, Inc, had defended “bank-nite” as a tegitimate advertising medium for theaters today in concluding testi mony on lottery law violation charges by the Postoffice Department. Mr. Thurimon testified before Assistant, Postoffice Solicitor Calvin Ww. Hassell. Peter J. Connolly, Postoffice attorney, argued that the company should be denied the el

of the mails in promoting “panknite” upon which it owns the copyright. | Mr. Thurmon said the postoftice | Department in order to establish violation of the lottery law must prove that a consideration or ‘price was ‘obtained for a chance to win an award of value. He satd that chance to obtain a cash award was involved, but denied that those ‘participating in “pank-nite” ‘paid anything. Registration books set up ih theater lobbies were open to every one to enter his ‘hame whether or not tickets to the theater were purchased, he said. «The signing of the book isa condition to participating in ‘banknite, ‘and ‘not something of value | paid for the privilege,” Mr. Thur- | mon said. He said a check at one theater | showed 38 ‘per ‘cent of the persons | receiving awards were outside when | their ‘hames were called, and made | ho ptirchase or payment.
