RANCH MYSTERY BECOMES TEXAS POLITICAL ISSUE

Kin of Pair Who Vanished On King Domain to Run As Tax Collector.

RAYMONDVILLE, Tex. Jan. 26 (U. P.).—The Blanton mystery, which agitated the feud between south Texas farmers and cowboys of the vast King ranch, Lecame a political issue today when Frank Blanton of San Perlita announced his candidacy for tax assessor and collector of Willacy County.

Mr. Blanton's father and brother disappeared after crossing a fence onto the King ranch to hunt ducks 14 months ago, and their family and friends feared that they were slain. Willacy County is the stronghold of the King ranchers. Mr. Blanton said he would run on an “anti-King platform.” “For many years the King ranch and other special interests have controlled government, politics and officials, not only in Willacy County, but all over south Texas,” he said. “Willacy is one of the few counties left where county officials owe their election to the King ranch.”

Frequently Clashed

Mr. Blanton's friends are the farmers of small tracts adjoining the great ranch, who for many years have been on hostile terms with the cowboys. They have clashed frequently over the ranch’s domination of the territory, the forbidding fences and “no trespassing” sings in a country of open ranges. King’s ranch once was the largest fenced area in the world. In postCivil War days, it set up cannons to defend itself from cattle rustlers and, in later years, grew into an| agricultural barony with political powers. One of the owners, Richard Kleberg, is a member of Congress. The ranch achieved world fame with cattle breeding experiments in recent years.

Ranch Searched in Vain

The disappearance in November, 1936, of Luther Blanton and his son, John, climaxed a growing feud. The men told their friends they were going to hunt ducks on the King ranch game preserves. Some of their friends saw them crawl through the fence onto the ranch. They did not return home.

Rumors persisted that they were slain, but suspicion never was directed at any one person. Officers searched the ranch several times and ranch managers gave them every assistance, but no trace of the Blantons was found.

At one time the Blantons’ friends announced they would take the law into their own hands and they prepared for an armed invasion of the ranch to search for the Blantons or their bodies, but State Rangers rushed in to prevent trouble.

Repeal of Hair Dye Tax Urged On House Body

WASHINGTON, Jan. 26 (U. P.).— Clarence N. Goodwin of Washington today asked the House Ways

and Means Committee to repeal excise taxes on hair coloring to enable middle-aged women to retain the youthful sheen of their hair and hold their jobs. “Hair coloring is the chief reliance of middle-aged women in defense of their jobs,” Mr. Goodwin said. similar organizations, he asked the committee studying tax revision to | eliminate excisg taxes on all toilet preparations. Hair coloring alone, he said, may not enable middleaged women to keep their jobs. “They also need other aids,” he said, “the creams that soften the skin, the coloring that is added and even the despised lipstick.” Since such beautifying agents | help the ladies to keep their jobs, Goodwin said, it is “unethical” to tax them.

GIRL WIFE INDICTED AS MATE'S SLAYER

Bride to Stand Trial After Plea Is Overruled.

FRANKFORT, Jan. 26 (U. P.).—— A Clinton County Grand Jury today had indicted Fernie Timmons, 18, on second-degree murder charges in the fatal shooting of her husband, Clarence Timmons, 28, at a drinking party last Friday night. Trial was set for Feb. 7 after the young bride's attorneys, Frank S. Prior and Hollis Davison, entered a plea of not guilty for her. They filed a motion to quash the indictment as soon as it was returned but Judge John Downing overruled the motion. Mrs. Timons is said to have told officers she shot her husband after he threatened to leave her. They
