Food for Thought
In Larry MacPhail the Dodgers seem to have a man who can manage their business. some business
Now, if they only had it would seem that
everything would be just dandy.
HAT a good defense is still an important factor in basketball is demonstrated by Northwestern which leads the Big Ten race with five victories in six starts. + « « Northwestern's offensive production has not kept pace with some teams lower in the standing, but the Wildcats have made it tough for the scoring of points by opponents and have been winning the thrill-packed close ones by well balanced play. . . . Their only defeat in Conference competition was by Purdue's Boilermakers who possess remarkable scoring talent, once they get hot. Northwestern's flagrant weakness is at the free throw line v'here its average of misses is unusually low for a major college quintet. . . . The Cats missed nine out of 15 Saturday in their 30-29 victory over Michigan's hardfighting squad. . . . They will have plenty of time to work on this problem because they don’t have another championship tilt until Feb. 12 against Wisconsin at Madison.

INCE the elimination of the center jump and its consequent speeding up of the game, many teams have place a preponderance of emphasis on offense, seeking to win by piling up a large total of points and permitting the defense to take care of itself. At Northwestern, Coach Dutch Lonborg has refrained from adopting this technique. . . . He believes that once teams become adjusted to the new niles the sport will revert to its former balanced offense and defense, and that the wild scramble that has characterized numerous contests so far this season will disappear. The Wildcats’ mentor also believes that by continuing to stress defense his players have been able to conserve
physical strength. ® zn = = ” 5
HIS week offers only two Big Ten battles, with Michigan at Ohio State tonight and Chicago at Minnesota Saturday.... It's examination time for the har¢wood warriors. ... Purdue will have an opportunity to tie Northwestern before the Cats return to title competition on Feb. 12. . The Boilermakers are in second place with three victories and one defeat, and if they come through against Indiana on Feb. 5 and against Illinois on Feb. 7, they will pull even with the Cats. Ohio State served notice Saturday that it's stronger than most observers reckoned. . The defeat of Illinois, 46-26, caught the experts napping. . . . Statistics supply the proof of the Bucks’ class. . They have av reraged 39 points a game in four starts and have held opponents to an average of 32. 8 " » td 4 2
HICAGO'S Maroons joined the upset league by troucing a strong Loyola team, 40-29, and the triumph may supply the spark to send the Midwayites off in a gallop. . . . Loyola's only previous loss this season was to Purdue. ... Lounsbury, forward, plunked in 16 points for the Maroons, and Eggemeyer, a Hoosier from Richmond, tallied 11. Chicago made only one substitution, which was at center when Amundsen was removed on personals. . You never can tell Maybe the Maroons have found the right combination at last. Lewis Dehner, of the Illini, Big Ten scoring leader, was held to seven points on two field goals and three free throws by the closeguarding Ohio Bucks Saturday and all that Frenchie Boudreau got out of it was a single field goal. un ” " 2
= = To more road games are on the schedule before Butler's Bulldogs clash with Indiana here on Feb. 1. . . . The Hinklemen play at Michigan State Jan. 28 and at Detroit Jan. 29. . . . The Bulldogs fell victims to Notre Dame's new winning streak at South Bend Saturday and the Irish won, 39-26. . . . It was a thriller in the first half and Butler led, 14-13, at intermission. . . . Notre Dame turned on the steam in the second and staged a 12-point rally midway in the period, and the Bulldogs were removed from the picture. Notre Dame zoomed its second half total to 26 points while holding Butler to 12. . . . The Irish will come to Indianapolis on Feb. 14 for the return game. » n ” n ” 2 ACED by Roudebush and Decker, Central Normal of Danville came from behind to down St. Joe College Saturday, 40-33. . . . The losers grabbed a lead, 12-9, at the half and Normal was pushed to get out in front. . . . Roudebush garnered 12 points, Decker 10, and Schaif was best for St. Joe with 12. All Hoosier college fives are idle tonight and the week's card will open tomorrow with St. Joe at Manchester, conqueror of Indiana Central here last Friday. . . . The Greyhounds, stopped after winning 12 in a row, will get a return crack at the Spartans at Manchester on Feb. 5. Indiana Central was the Hoosier State's last undefeated team and only Valparaiso is left unbeaten in Indiana College Conference competition, » ” 2 » n ”
E 'SRrTHING was bigger and better in the 1938 Marion County High School tournament. . Decatur Central repeated its 1937 triumph but only after a double overtime, 31-29, to repulse a courageous New Augusta squad. Tournament attendance and receipts were well over last year and there was no end to exciting moments during the eliminations. Bob Gladden is coach of the victorious Hawks and George Butler is captain. . . . Butler was tournament high pointer and his 15 points in the sensational title tilt warded off defeat. . He tossed the field goal which knotted the game, 29-all, in regulation time, and Howard Hoffman tallied the deciding points in the second overtime. ... The first extra period was scoreless.
Gets Chance at Title Tomorrow
Leong Tin Kit is the name, but to wrestling fans the rugged bronzed gentleman is Walter (Sneeze) Achiu, one of the best light heavies in the mat industry. And Walter, incidently, says that in the Chinese language, “Tin Kit” means “Hero From Heaven.” Anyway, the fast and tricky Dayton, O., matman gets a shot at Billy Thom and his light heavyweight championship belt tomorrow night at the Armory. The bout is sanctioned as a title affair by the Indiana State Athletic Commission with a winner and loser to be declared by the referee if the opponents fail to decide their difference by falls. ‘Bloomington | Gives Bulldogs First Defeat
Six Other Favored Teams Keep Up Victory Streak Over Week-End.
By United Press
New Albany was among the beaten today, tripped unexpectedly by Bloomington’s revitalized Panthers Saturday night in perhaps the biggest upset of the Hoosier prep basketball season. Only last week, Coach Glen Bretz shook up his Panther ranks, dropping two regulars from a varsity that had been beaten often and badly by numerous southern Indiana teams, several of whom had bowed to New Albany. Bud Goodwin's left-handed hook shot in the last 12 seconds broke the Bulldogs long victory trail at 12 games. Frank Zoeller had given New Albany the lead a few seconds before on a free throw and the “treacherous 13th” was merely awaiting the gun when Goodwin's toss swished through. It was New Albany's first Southern Conference defeat and tied them with Sullivan. Six of Hoosierdom's big teams crashed through to added victories and 16 of the toughest quintets in the Wabash Valley qualified for this week's tournament finals by winning their sectionals. Hammond Still on Top Hammond's Wildcats kept on top the Western Division by taking a grudge battle from Valparaiso, 39 to 25. Emerson of Gary retained second place in a 33-15 rout of Froebel as the Norsemen shackled their opponents’ fast break and Pete Fogo, reputedly one of the best forwards in the state, broke through for 15 points. Intersectional rivalries flared in Ft. Wayne as Vincennes trounced Central, 37 to 28, and South Side edged past Connersvile, 28 to 24. The victory for the southern invaders from Vincennes marked the gain in power and teamwork that has come in their iast few games. Hartford City Beaten The South Siders’ rush through a long list of tough squads, stopped only by the La Porte Slicers, shows for the first time in years a possible state finalist from one of Indiana's larger cities. North Side ran over Hartford City, 42 to 23, to remain undefeated in the Northeastern Conference. The other powerful team to continue its winning stride was Huntingburg. “The Happy Hunters, winners of a state semifinal last year, trounced Reitz of Evansville, 38 to 17, for their 13th victory of the season. Few important games are scheduled for the middle of the week. Tomorrow night Horace Mann of Gary will try to pull back into second place in the Western Division in a tilt with Emerson. Wednesday New Albany gets a test against the Salem Lions, leaders of the Southeastern Conference with eight straight victories. Jeffersonville meets Male of Louisville in another scrap that will draw southern interest. In Central Indiana, Jefferson of Lafayette takes on Delphi and and Logansport plays Peru.

in Sectionals
Decatur Central's Hawks perchied on the Marion County prep basketball throne for the second successive year today and prepared for the six games left on their schedule, confident they will be one of the teams
to beat in the sectionals. The Hawks
“re-elected” themselves as county champions with a
hair-raising 31-to-29, double-overtime victory over New Augusta's Red
Devils in the final round of the county tourney at Southport Gym Saturday. Howard Hoffman, junior center returned his team to the championship when he dropped in an under-the-basket shot just as the second extra period began. Both teams had gone scoreless thrcugh the first overtime. Under Indiana high school basketball rules, the first team to gain a two-point advantage in the second overtime is declared the winner. It was George Butler, star senior forward, who brought the winners back into the battle after they trailed, 28 to 19, with six minutes to play. Butler was prevented from being in at the finish when he fouled out in the last seconds of regulation time, being replaced by the game-winning Hoffman. The Red Devils dashed to the fore in the third quarter, outscoring the Hawks, }0 to 2, and were engaged in pyramiding their total when Butler entered the fray.
Scores Three Fielders
He immediately hit three field goals and Vern Miller added another while Charles Grundy was getting New Augusta's last score with a free throw and the score was 29 to 27, New Augusta's favor. Miller missed a free throw Then, Butler tied the score by tapping in a rebound with about a minute to play, only to commit his fourth foul on Dick Grundy and be forced from the floor. Hoffman took Butler's post. Dick Grundy missed the free throw. During the final seconds, the Hawks held onto the ball but couldn't register. In the first overtime, Coach Bob Gladden's cagers missed five shots while New Augusta fired one futile attempt, and the stage was set for Hoffman's winning blow. Butler, Hoffman and Charlie Shanklin led the Hawk attack, Butler setting a tourney record of 15

points in a single game with his seven field goals and one free throw. Coach Guy Anderson's losers scored only one point during the last eight-odd minutes of play. Until that time, two big men, Forward Don Stewart and Center Max Burden, kept the Red Devils near to or ahead of the Hawks, The game was cleanly played, both teams accumulating only 15 fouls, compared to the 33 which they committeed in the afternoon semifinals.
