AND TROJANS UPSET STANFORD

MIGHTY? Stanford fell before Southern California’s band of Hoosier high school graduates, 49-48, when Ralph Vaughn, Frankfort, Ind., tossed a field goal with two seconds of play remaining. . .. It was a sizzling basketball strugele and a disappearing Stanford point on the scoreboard caused a lot of excitement. It was scored by Horace Lee of Stanford after he had been fouled by Dale Sears of Southern California a second or so before the gun sounded ending the first half. The timekeeper, after his gun finally popped, dashed out on the floor and claimed that he had tried to

FTER a long argument the coaches and officials decided to let Lee take his shot and—if it happened to play a decisive part in the outcome of the game—to submit the case to the National Rules Committee.

Lee made good on the free throw,

but the point was

erased later when Coach John Bunn found a rule book

And, therefore, the Trojans won the game.

South-

FINAL 7:30—Winner 1:00 vs. Winner 2:00.

Rid of the menace that was Beech Grove’'s game Hornets, Decatur Central will continue its drive toward a second Marion County prep net title against Southport at Southport gym this afternoon.

The Hawks will meet Southport’s husky Cardinals at 1:30 p. m. At 2:30 p. m.,, Warren Central and New | Augusta will play the other serni- | final tilt in the annual county fixture, In their opening tourney game, before an overflow crowd of about 2300, the Hawks thumped Beech Grove, 37 to 18, last night. Charlie | Shanklin and Howard Hoffman | shoved Decatur Central into an 8-to-1 lead early in the game and, with George Butler scoring frequently from then on, Coach Bob Gladden’s cagers raced to an easy | victory.

Hawks Scores Frequently

Good blocking shook Hawks out in the open for frequent clear shot at the basket.

Southport had little difficulty with a Speedway City five that seemed tired. Coach Buck Plunkitt started his first five and kept most of them in until the waning minutes. Speedway controlled the ball a fair share of the time but couldn't find openings in the Cardinal defense like those through which it drove to an upset victory over Ben Davis in the morning round.

Williams Leads Scoring

Little Johnny Williams hit five goals and four free throws for 14 points to lead the Cardinals. Warren Central and New Augusta, opponents in the second semfinal this afternoon, won easily from Castleton and Lawrence respectively in first-round games yesterday. Warren Central ranked as one of four or five favorites in pre-tour-ney “doping.” As an added feature of the varsity meet, a four-team county freshman tourney got under way today at 9 a. m. Southport, Ben Davis, New Augusta and Decatur Central Were entered. After a see-saw first half, the Blue Devils jumped ahead to lead, 19 to 14, at half-time, with Don Bruce, Les Moreland, and Krampe leading the way. In the second half, Krampe, Bruce and Bill Stautz kept Shortridge slightly ahead while, Quinn and Capt. Bill Hurrle of the Irish led a vain assault. Washington repeated its city series win over Manual with a 49-to-27 decision at the Washington gym. Hope to Stop Townsend and Improve Chances for Championship.

By STEVE SNIDER United Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO, Jan, 22.-—Northwest-ern’s hopes for at least a share of the Big Ten basketball champion« ship hinges tonight on a successful stand against Michigan's methodi« cal Wolverines. In a surprising surge through the first half of its schedule, Northe western whipped all but Purdue— the current favorite. If the Wilde cats can dump Michigan, their chances of running through the same foes on the last leg of their will be considerably

Illinois travels to Ohio State in the only other conference game tonight, Outside the league, Chicago meets Loyola,

Michigan invades Northwestern

| with a record of three victories and | one

defeat—by Wisconsin--in second place tie with Purdue, Townsend Big Hurdle Impressive as their record is, however, the Wolverines play just the style of game Northwestern can handle best. Both teams prefer a more deliberate offense, in direct contrast to the helter-skelter attack employed by virtually every other team in the Conference since the center jump rule was eliminated, By stopping one man -- Johnny Townsend Wisconsin defeated Michigan last Monday. Townsend was held to four points and, with their key man shackled by alert guards, Michigan was almost help less. Both Northwestern’s guards—Jim Currie and Ad Vance—will be asked to keep their eyes on Townsend. Countering, will be Jake Nagode, Wildeat center, who has directed Northwestern's attack since the opening game of the season. Mike McMichael, best shot on the squad, may not operate much against Michigan. His injured ankle still will not permit high-speed play and the Wildcats need speed more than anything else.
