Ellender Breaks Record but Few Know What He Said, | Clapper States.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 21.—From
now on the finger of fame will point |
to Senator Ellender (D. La).
He |
made a Senate speech which lasted |
for a whole week—six days, mind vou, not one of these bobtailed fiveday weeks. Little has been learned about our hero, so suddenly has fame turned toward him. He was born in Montegut, Terrebonne (Good Parish, La. the Senate last Friday. Yesterday he paused, not from exhaustion as some unappreciative persons had hoped, but becuse a fellow Senator, Bilbo (D. Miss.) also wanted to say a word against this Federal proposal to stop lvnching, and Senator Ellender is not one to entirely monopolize the conversation could easilv have gone on talking until the end of his term in 1943.
He Is Modest
Ellender is modest about You would scarcehis quiet retirthere was a man who had done what neither Daniel ! Webster, William Jennings Bryan. Demosthenes nor any of the other great orators in history had done. Senators have talked all in previous filibusters. The Senator Burton won fame by speaking in. and practically through. his carpet slippers. But no man before has put Senate oratory on an equal footing with six-day bicycle racing That was possible because Senator Ellender adopted bicycle racing technique to Senate oratory. Like the bicycle races and the marathon dancers, Senator Ellender took time out every night to sleep. Mr. Webster never thought of that He just talked straight through and of course soon ran out of ideas or wind or both. Not Senator Ellender. In the first place, he uses ideas sparingly. There have been few orators who could make an idea go farther or last longer. Secondly. by taking time out for refreshing sleep each night. he never exhausted himself but only his audience,

Said It would be impossible in any limited space to outline the substance of Senator Ellender’s historic six-day speech. Federal antilynching legislation has been debated in the Senate vear after year. Each time it is subjected to a filibuster by Southern Senators. There is nothing new to pe said on the subject but Senator Ellender said it anyway and said it more thoroughly. He pointed with pride to the treatment of the Negro in the South and viewed with alarm the Negro's political power In North. He was fighting to save the South from losing the Civil War all over again. Yet, how much is this appreciated? Few Senators listened. Most of them took time out during Senator Ellender’'s speech to catch up on their mail Future generations in Terrebonne Parish, may what was said by their most distinguished product, Senator Ellender, but they will know it took him six days to say it
