DEVORE NAMED COACH
PROVIDENCE, R. I., Jan. 20 (U.| P.) —Appointment of Hugh John Devore, former Notre Dame captain in 1933 and all-America end and for the last three years assistant coach at Fordham, as head football coach at Providence College was announced today.

Hinkle Drills His Reserves
Perry and Steiner Again on Injured List.
In an attempt to strengthen his reserve material, Coach Tony Hinkle dismissed his regulars yesterday afternoon and spent the entire drill instructing his reserves for Saturday night's clash with Notre Dame at South Bend. The Irish will play a return engagement here Feb. 14. George Perry, regular forward, was absent from yesterday’s drill due to a leg injury received early in the Indiana Central game Tuesday night. Perry pulled a ligament early in the football season and has been handicapped ever since. It was feared the former All-State player may not attempt further participation this season. Additional worries have been placed on Hinkle because Jerome Steiner, flashy sophomore forward, also was injured Tuesday night. Steiner, however, is expected to, be in shape for Saturday night's contest. Butler and Notre Dame netters have met 26 times, with Notre Dame winning 16 of the contests. The Bulldogs have been unable to defeat the defending national champions for the last four campaigns. Butler came close to a triumph last season when they were edged out by the Irish, 25 to 24, at South Bend. Later in Indianapolis the Hinklemen were handed a decisive trouncing. Notre Dame added another victory last night when the Irish took a 51-to-41 victory from the Pitts burgh Panthers in Pittsburgh. Notre Dame (51) Pitt. Fighting Team MacPhail’'s Goal
NEW YORK, Jan. 20 (U. P.).— Larry MacPhail, one of a party of American doughboys who tried to kidnap the Kaiser 20 years ago, had another bold plot under way today. He'll try to straighten the tangled affairs of the Brooklyn baseball club. MacPhail has signed a three-year contract as executive vice president of the Dodgers with complete authority to run the club. Briefly, MacPhail’s platform may be listed as follows: 1. Build the Dodgers into an aggressive contender, 2. Build a farm club organization te produce players. 3. Repair and recondition park 4. Make Burleigh Grimes boss on the field 5. Cancel all pending deals for Van Mungo unless only worth-while players are involved.
