STATE JOB AID SERVIGE PLACES 96,210 IN 1937
Number of Applicants Who Got Work Tops That of 1936 by 1232.
Placement of 56.210 applicants on jobs with about 10,000 private employer: during 1937 showed an increase of 1232 over 1936, Martin F. Carpenter, Indiana State Employment Service director, said today. A total of 8354 firms and individuals, not including domestic employers, used the Service's facilities last year, he said. “If the high level of industrial employment which marked most of 1936 and the first half of last year had continued until the end of the 1037, it is believed that employers in the State could have hired at least 60,000 from our files,” said Mr. Carpenter. “As it was, gains were made in private placements in each of the first three quarters when comparisons were made with the corresponding periods of 1936. “Due to the general retrenchment in Government-financed work, public works project employers asked the Service to aid in filling 11,741 jobs as compared to 44,553 reported for 193 for 1936, the di director said.
