STOCKS IRREGULAR
IN LIGHT
TRADING
ON NEW YORK MART
a>
Discounting of Franc Brings Firmer Tone.
NEW YORK, Jan. 14 (U. P.).—Stocks moved irregularly in light trading in the first half of today’s session. Around noon most of them
were above the day’s lows.
Traders felt that the market had amply discounted the French crisis vesterday and a firmer tone was noted at the opening. Later there was some profit-taking. Demand continued for gold mining stocks by those who wished to hedge against possible inflation. Nearly all of the group made new highs. New tops for a year or more were made by Dome Mines at 573%, up 3s; Homestake Mining 58%, up 1, and McIntyre Porcupine at 427%, up v8. Steel issues registered small gains as did motors. Most of the railroad issues were slightly higher and utilities gained fractions to a point. Farm shares eased. Coppers eased to the previous close after a rise.
Chemicals were a point or so lower. n ns »

Light Porkers Gain 5 Cents In Trade Here
While local hog values dropped 10 to 25¢ from Thursday's early or high time, lightweight hogs under 200-ibs. showed mostly a 5c gain from yesterday's closing levels, according to the Bureau of Agricultural Economics. Top worked to $9 for best 150 %to 170-lb. averages. The big end of today’s downturn hit weighty hogs scaling over 260 Ibs. and in sympathy, packing sows lost around 10 to 15¢, bulking from $6 to $6.75. There were more heavy, rough sows today from: $6 to $6.15, with only a few good lightweights reaching above $6.75. Premiums remained very scarce as local values held a comparatively high position, especially lightweight offerings. Limited cattle receipts offered | no thorough test, but trading on | all classes continued in the dependable manner which has characterized the week's previous dealing. Steers grading low good and below, valued at $6.50 to $8, are mostly 25¢ lower for the week. Scatterings of lower grade heifers cleared today at $6 to $7, with cutter grades of cows at $4 to $5 and best beef cows to $6. Vealers were steady with Thursday's average, good and choice grades bulking at $12 to $1250, with an extreme $13 top on a few selected offerings. All represented classes in the sheephouse held unchanged from vesterday. Good and choice fat lambs bulked at $8 to $8.50, the latter price including around three doubles of finished western lambs. Lower grade natives moved downward to $6 mostly. Fed yearlings comprising one double deck made $7.25. Slaughter ewes topped at $4 for choice handyweights.

WHEAT RALLY FAILS TO MAINTAIN RISE
Corn Buying Chiefly in May Futures.
Tis 25%
123% 403%
CHICAGO, Jan. 14 (U. P)—A recovery movement which rallied wheat prices almost a cent a bushel on the Chicago Board of Trade today disappeared before opposition in midsession. At the end of the first hour wheat was 7% to 1 cent lower, corn was 3% to 3% cent lower, and oats were 1% to 14 cent lower. Scattered buying which erased part of the early losses was credited to mill interests. However, disappointing cables and the flat foreign demand for American wheats brought back renewed selling. A report from Wichita said that lack of moisture was emphasized yesterday by severe dust storms over a wide area of western Kansas. Wheat receipts were 28 cars. Corn selling was chiefly in May futures but fair buying was noted on resting orders and by cash interests. Elevotor interests were on the selling side. Corn receipts were 1s to 14 cent lower.

Horoscope Omitted Most Important Thing, Thief Learns.
HICAGO, Jan. 14 (U. P.).— William Soehlman, 35, St. Louis, found out today that his horoscope reading for the month of January was only half correct. Soehlman, minus a hat and coat, stalked into a storage room
at the Sears-Roebuck store here today and, posing as an employee, started to put four fur coats valued at $150 into a laundry bag he had purchased a few minutes before for 25 cents. Regular store employees didn’t recognize him. They: called the house detective, who turned him over to the police. In his pocket, police found a horoscope card which read: “Mars will have a peculiar influence over you in the month of January. Your lucky days are the 11, 12, 13 and 14.” The house detective’s name is William Mars.

Act Your Age!
Identity Cards Favored To Certify Student Can Take a Nip.
SYSTEM of identification cards for Indiana college students to certify their ages when patronizing liquor establishments was recommended today by Hugh A. Barnhart, State Excise Director. In a letter to presidents of all Indiana colleges and universities, except schools for women, Mr. Barnhart suggested adoption of the system now in effect at Purdue University. 1 At Purdue, he explained, each student has been issued a card bearing his name, address, age, telephone number, signature and picture. When a student orders an alcoholic beverage, according to Mr. Barnhart, he must present his identification card to show that he is at least 21, as required by State law. If he is younger, as shown by the card, he is refused a drink, the director said.

Nevadan Wins in Death The Attention He Craved In Vain From Afar.
HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 14 (U. P.).— Succeeding in death what he had attempted in vain for more than two decades of his life, Clark Alvard at last gained the attention today of Miss Marion Davies, the woman he loved—from afar. “He adopted the simple expedient of leaving the major portion. of
his small estate to her, and then clinched his plans by naming her as one of the executors. Her share is approximately $10,000. Miss Davies, who weekly is earning that same sum at Warner Brothers, must help settle his affairs in court and so will have stamped indelibly upon her mind— as he had planned it eight years ago—the fact that Clark loved her, even unto death. In 1916, Mr. Alvard was a middleaged gold prospector in the Nevada desert. He trudged 40 miles into Las Vegas one Saturday to see a movie. The picture happened to be the first that Miss Davies made. Mr. Al” rd thought she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. He wrote her a letter telling her so.
Asked for Photographs
He got no reply, but that did not halt his devotion to the woman whose shadow had captured his heart. Through the years he made it a point, wherever he was, to see every picture in which Miss Davies appeared. From his shack in the wilderness he wrote her letters. He asked for autographed photographs. He expressed a desire to meet her. For years he never received a reply. Then, when the movie studios began hiring public relations directors, he got mimeographed notes saying that Miss Davies, who covldn't possibly have read the thousands of letters sent her, appreciated his interest. The notes usually added that if he would send a quarter, a picture of her would be forthcoming. Even this did not disvourage Mr. Alvard. He sent his 25 cents and he obtained his picture, by second-class mail. No word accom-= panied it from the woman he idolized, not even an autograph. As the years passed, Mr. Alvard’s hair grayed, and he became postmaster and general storekeeper in the tiny mining camp of Nelson, 20 miles from Las Vegas. Still he wrote Miss Davies letters, always respectful, even adoring. She never replied.
Added Codicil to Will
In 1930 he wrote his will with a hand more used to the pick than the pen. He scrawled these words: “1 give and bequeath to my beloved Marion Davies all my prop-
SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 14 (U. P.). —Her fingernail polish was a nice pastel shade called ‘robin red,” and just the thing for sports wear, Mrs. Alta Moore, 23, told the jury, yet she was ejected from a football game Nov. 6 because it happened to be the color of the rival team. Mrs. Moore is suing James E. Addicott, principal of Polytechnic High School, for $10,000 damages. Addicott has a discriminating taste for reds. The Polytechnic sghool colors, for instance, thrill him to the marrow. But the words he used to describe Mrs. Moore's pastel, she said, was “slaughterhouse.”
STATE PRISON, FLORENCE, Ariz, Jan. 14 (U.P.).—Jack Odom had his 16 relatives in for chicken dinner, told them that he ‘never felt happier in nis life,” bade them all goodby, and stepped into the prison gas chamber at dawn today to have his life snuffed out for mur-
der. Odom, a Texas cotton picker when he was free, was 28. He killed Charles E. Goade, another cotton picker, who lay asleep in a wagon, then went through the dead man's pockets, finding only 54 cents. He presided at the family reunion in his cell last night by the sufferance of Warden A.J. Barnes. Among the 16 relatives were the condemned man’s wife, who came from Corsicana, Tex. His mother and several brothers and sisters also attended. His mother, Mrs. R. Hazeltin of Tolleson, Ariz., requested a picture of her doomed son and a photographer was called in to take it. Odom joked with his guards during the

Then he began to worry, not only about his relatives, but about the fact that perhaps Miss Davies might never hear of him, despite his gift. So he added a co= dicil : “I desire 45 per cent of my estate to be divided among my legal heirs, the rest to go according to my last will. I appoint John S. Sartain and Leo McNamee and Marion Davies as executors of this will, to act without bond.” To this document he attached her 25-cent photograph. He died the other day in a Las Vegas hospital of an accumulation of ailments. His will was filed for probate—and as he had planned for so long—Miss Davies, in person, was informed of his death. “I never met Mr. Alvard,” she said. “He wrote several letters for photographs, which were sent him in due course. He always was very kind and complimentary. I imagine I shall give my share of his estate to charity—in his name.”
Rooting Section Saw Red, So Girl Sues for $10,000
It was unfortunate that Mrs, Moore had taken her seat in the Polytechnic student's cheering section just as the robin red-shirted Lowell High School team was walke ing all over Polytechnic. Mrs. Moore's attorney, Jerome Schiller, said his client was “as=saulted, mauled, ill-treated and wounded, and that as a result she suffered great bodily harm.” Mrs. Moore said that she used to go to Polytechnic and that she was always loyal to Polytechnic’'s teams, but that Addicott told her “we don’t want your kind here,” and called a
policeman to eject her.
