GENTEEL JURY SOUGHT IN WIFE MURDER TRIAL

Defense Attorney Says His Client Shot Without Premeditation.

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 14 (U. P).— Jerry Geisler, the lawyer defending Paul A. Wright, charged with Killing his wife and his best friend

in the living room of his home, was attempting today to obtain & jury of conservative, middle-aged citi~ gens, presumably men and women whose lives were such that they would be easily shocked. He surveyed with satisfaction the seven men and one wpman past middle age seated as potential jurors to try Wright for slaying his wife, Mrs. Evelyn Wright, 29, and John B, Kimmel, 36. Other criminal lawyers, who watched the case with interest, called it a “horse and buggy jury” in the making. They said it was obvious that Mr. Geisler was trying to seal “genteel, prejazz generation people” who would be impressed by & sordid story and would understand how Wright might have suffered such a shock by what he saw that he killed on the spur of the moment, without premeditation.

Questions Young Jurors

During the selection of the seven Jurors yesterday, Mr. Geisler direct ed most of his questions at the one man and woman who appeared to be under 40, The more elderly jurors he approved with little comment. Wright, who earned $600 a month as manager of Union Air Terminal here, allegedly shot his wife and Mr. Kimmel Nov. 9. He and Mr. Kimmel had been to an airmen's stag party. He brought Mr. Kimmel home with him. They had been drinking and he was drowsy, so he retired for a nap, he said, and left his wife to entertain his guest. When he returned to the living room about an hour later, he said that they were sitting on the piano bench kissing each other. Ernest Roll, Deputy District Attorney, anticipatilng the defense, told the jurors that “under the law there is no such legal defense as the unwritten law.’

TO AGE OF FISH

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 (U. P). --Scientists find they can tell the age of a fish in the way the age of a tree is determined, except that the fish doesn't have to be cut crosswise. The new process, the U, S. Bureau of Fisheries anncnced today, requires the examination of fish scales under a microscope. Magnification shows a series of concentric ridges similar to the rings found on the cross section of a tree. From the spacing of these rings, the bureau said, a scientist can determine the age of & fish.

Nine cents of every dollar spent by the movie-going public goes into advertising, Leon Bamberger, sales promotion manager of RKO Radio Pictures, today had told members of the Advertising Club. Mr. Bamberger, who began his career here after graduation from Shortridge High School, said the public spends between 85 and 90 million dollars annually in theaters. He pointed out yesterday in his talk on “My Business Is Different,” that the industry, unlike others, is selling an unknown quantity until a picture is finished.

since Oct. 1 in “the most horrible unprovoked massacre of modern times,” according to Quentin Reynolds, associate editor of Collier's, Mr. Reynolds, who was called to Washington by the State Department to report his findings in Haiti, interviewed both President Vincent of Haiti and President Trujillo of the Dominican Republic, who has been accused of ordering the mass killings of defenseless men, women and children. He also talked with numerous survivors and examined scores of injured. In an article, “Murder in the Tropics,” Mr. Reynolds states 200, 000 Haitians live in the Dominican Republic, having moved across the border to work in the sugar fields during boom days, and members of | this group are now being slaughtered in an effort to force them to return to their own country, it is charged.
