PROPOSED RATE RISE ARGUED IN ATLANTA

ATLANTA, Ga, Jan. 8 (U. P).— Testimony favoring a proposed 15

per cent increase in railroad freight rates began today at a hearing being conducted here by the Interstate Commerce Commission. Appearance of proponents of the increase followed testimony by numerous shippers who opposed raising the freight rates on grounds that such an increase would divert additional traffic to motor vehicle transportation lines. B. M. Edwards, executive vice president of the South Carolina National Bank, said he considered the 15 per cent increase desirable because of a revenue necessity on the part of the railroads.

WHEAT FUTURES FIRM NEAR END OF PIT SESSION

Coen Goes Lower After Drip In Buenos Aires Dealings.

CHICAGO, Jan. 8 (U. P.).— Wheat futures firmed toward the end of the session on the Chicago Board of Trade today after moving somewhat erratically on both sides of previous closing levels. At the close wheat was 1% to 112 cent higher, May 973 cents; corn was 1% cent lower to ?s cent higher, 623% cents and oats were !'s to lz cent higher, May 32% cents. Opening prices were steady to a fraction lower under the depressing influence of losses in foreign markets. Trade was light and mixed in character and the market improved when small gains were chalked up at Winnipeg. The rise attracted cumbersome offerings and prices sagged, recovering in later trade. Export business in North American Wheat was reported to have been of extremely small proportions. Corn was lower at the start after a sharp downturn at Buenos Aires. Reports of good rains in the Argentine overnight caused many to hope that some corn has been saved from deterioration. Export business amounted to about 500,000 bushels. Chicago shippers were notably inactive during the early part of the session. There was scattered. selling but prices showed little change, clinging close to yesterday's close. Liverpool was unchanged to % cents higher at the close, prices easing under hedging pressure and profit taking. Week end covering brought steadiness into the market. Poor response to offers of American dark hard wheats has been attributed to unsatisfactory financial conditions abroad.
