Back to Sea,
Robert Horne n J
But Not on Priv 2 Freed in Pirate Ship’ Killing
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 7 (U. P.).—Back to sea, undaunted, will go Robert Horne and George Spernack, young deckhands of the yacht Aafje, who threw the mutinous Jack Morgan to the sharks, and were exonerated
of the killing yesterday.
The Fedoral Grand Jury returned ®
a “no bili,” deciding the two seamen acied in self-defense in disposing of Morgan, who shot Dwight Fauldirg, the Aafje’s skipper. and | headed the boat toward the South | Seas for a planned career of piracy. Released from jall, Horne and Spernack sniffed the air outside the Hall of Justice and grinned. “First of all, we're going to wrap ourselves around a good thick steak,” they said. “Jail wasn't so bad, but we don’t like so many beans. Then we're going back to the sea—but not on a private yacht. It's too dangerous.” The two amateur seamen, Horne a photographer by profession, and Spernack a friend of the slain skipper, had been hired to help sail the trim little Aafje on a two-day cruise | around nearby Santa Catalina | Island. | Morgan, who chartered the vessel supposedly for such a trip, killed the | skipper a few hours out, Spree] the passengers and took command. | He sailed south to satisfy a mad | dream df founding an “island para- | dise” and equipping it by looting other boats that he met. The women were aboard: Mor- | gan’'s 17-year-old common-law wife, | Lillian; Elsie Berdan, pretty 22-| vear-old nurse for Mrs. Morgan, who | is an expectant mother, and Mrs. | Gertrude Turner, Faulding's fiancee. | Morgan threatened and abused all | of them, and was especially harsh to Mrs. Turner's 8-year-old son, Bobby. After four days, Horne felled Morgan with a marline-spike, and Spernack helped him toss the mad man | overboard in the shark-infested waters I Mexico.
