Excitement Often Upsetting To Small Children’s Nerves

By OLIVE ROBERTS BARTON

The following is an excellent example, I think, of punishment following upon upset in routine. Half of all correction is really not the child’s fault, but the result of some circumstance that interferes with his regular. program. Sa A small girl was invited to. a celebration. after supper, which meant bedtime usually for the little 4-year-old. But the kindly neighbor’ insisted that the puppet show would only last for an hour, so mother said, “All right, Sally will there, and thank you.” : ho The show lasted longer than this and Sally did not get home until ‘9

departure for Shut Eye Town. Sally was on her high horse. She would not be undressed. She slipped downstairs while her mama was getting out her nighty and fixing the bed, and she pretended not to hear the callings and pleadings from above stairs. No, she was not going to bed and she was going to have a lollypop and play with her dolly. The more she was coaxed, the balkjer she got. Stern words left her unmoved. Sally behaved as she had never behaved before. 7

Whole Evening Spoiled

_ Then down came mother, picked up her screaming offspring and carried her up shrieking and kicking to her fate. As the little girl continued to act like a small fury, she got & sound spanking. She went to sleep sobbing and unhappy. Her jolly time had wound up in a contretemps that spoiled: the ‘whole evening. #3 Her mother asked me what course I would have taken under the circumstaces. I replied that being human, I, too, would probably have allowed the child to go to the puppet show. As for the punishment, I might have done what she did, but first I would have asked’ myself whose fault it was that the

past normal. : Children never behave nicely when they are over-tired or cver1y excited. They may appear to be perfectly normal to us, as. they don’t yawn or look sleepy when they are worn out. On the contrary, their eyes get big and bright, their senses seem to be alert and quick.

Sometimes they do their cutest tricks when. they are at the end of their tethers. It is always deceiving and seldom understood. ‘Half of punishment, as I remarked - before, is brought about by our own mistakes. The parent who runs out of patience and resorts to the: whipping should always take time to weigh facts. Has the little boy or girl’ been emotionally disturbed? Is he over-tired? Is he his normal self when he gets impertinent or smart? : I do not’ recommend. punishment at such critical times, but instead suggest that we make allowances for situations. The child who misbehaves as a result of lack of sleep or from any other like cause, is really another child. Tomorrow he, or she,

will have forgotten the whole thing |:

and will again be our sunny and lovable darling. :

Vinegar Erases Stains Be sure to clean your transparent vases often and thoroughly —for they easily become stained from the flowers themselves. Vinegar will remove stains that soap and water fail to budge.

Ivy Needs Plant Food If you can’t get ivy to grow indoors—try “feeding” it a tablet of plant food ‘about once a week. Ivy so considerately treated will perk right up and grow faster than you ever hoped.
