'37 Auto Production 4,975,000, 2d Largest Figure

on Record,

Exceeded Only by

1929, Says Report Of Association.

Times Special

NEW YORK, Dec. 31.—

America’s automobile produc- |

tion for 1937 was the second largest in the history of the industry, the Automobile Manufacturers Association

reported today. The year’s output was estimated at 4,975,000 units, or 4,050,000 passenger cars and 925,000 trucks. Total production of cars and trucks in 1929, the best year, was 5,621,715. The year’s production by all auto manufacturers was 8 per cent higher than in 1936 and 250 per cent greater than in 1932, Wholesale value of ‘all automotive products, including accessories, replacement parts and tires, service equipment, cars and trucks was reported at $4,177,000,000. Of amount, cars and trucks accounted for $2,802,000,000. The Association said “the extent which automobile prices have been reduced is indicated by the fact that while the wholesale values of output in 1927 and 1937 were almost the same ($2,700,705,743 and $2,802,000,000 respectively), yet the number of vehicles produced in 1937 exceeded the 1927 output by more than one million uni ? The commercial vehicle division set a new record by producing 925,000 units, or an increase of 12 per cent over the 1929 production figure of 826,817. Increased production costs resulting from advanced wage payments to workers and higher material costs have compelled manufacturers to make some increases in automebile prices, the Association said. But the average cost of current models is still more than $200 under the average price of 10 years ago, it was pointed out. 7
