‘Biggest Industrial Growth Period.’

Indianapolis. Chamber of Coinmerce officials today forecast expansion of the City’s trading area and development of wholesale commei'ce in 1933. The Chamber’s annual report termed 1937 “the City’s biggest industrial growth period.” Retiring Fresident George S. Olive said “the Chamber’s program for in-

dustry will se based upon the belief that service to existing industry is the strongest attraction to new in-

“dustry.”

of nearly $10,000,000 and potential employment opportunities for more than 5500 persons. They are the International Harvester Co. and the Stewart-Warner Corp. The Chamber’s bureau of government research attempted to bring about a cut in the Indianapolis tax levy, “but was disappointed when the levy was increased.” ' Other measures worked on during the 1937 legislature included successful defense of the employer reserve system in the State Unemployment Compensation Law, and elimination of “snooper” provisions in several proposed labor relstions bills, the the report stated.

OFFICIAL OF MINERS’ UNION QUITS POST

BRAZIL, Dec. 31 (U. P.).—John J. Mathis, - Elarmony, today resigned as district secretary-treasurer of the United Mine Workers Indians District 8 to accept a position with the National Bituminous Coal Commission. Mr. Mathis will become an investigator in the Indiana coal fields. Jacob M. Luther, Clay City, former district president, has been named acting secretary-treasurer uatil a special election is called.

OIL REFINER ASKS $10,000 TAX REFUND

The Socony Vacuum Oil Co. today sought to recover $10,126.68 in taxes paid to the State through an alleged error. In a suit on file in Superior Court 3, the Socony Co. stated it paid the taxes on 220,247 gallos of gasoline that had evaporated from storage tanks in East Chicago between Oct. 1, 1934 and. March 31 of this year.

Credit Facilities Available To 169,400 More Persons In Two States.

Credit facilities of the Federal Home Loan Bank during 1937 were made available to about 169,400 ad= ditonal persons living in Indiana. and Michigan, Fermor S. Cannon, Board of Directors chairman and vice president of the bank, announced today. These persons represent the populations of cities and towns in which savings, building and loan associa tions became members of the syse tem during the year, Mr. Cannon explained. “Twenty-two additional savings and loan associations joined the bank in 1937, 14 of them in communities in which the bank had no previous member institutions.

5-Year Peak Attained

“By the addition of these meme bers a five-year peak was reached in the bank’s outlets for the funds which it supplies for home mortgage purposes to 200 institutions, representing more than 80 per cent of the total resources of all savings 2nd > loan association in the two 8s “These institutions are located in 122 municipalities which now have at least one thrift and home financing institution in their midst with access to the funds of the Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis.”

Offer Loans to Thousands

During the five years the bank has been operating, local capital ine vested in home financing institu= tions in these cities has been sup= plemented by $5,525,000 from debentures sold by the Federal Home Loan Bank system this year, and by $6,577,000 of Government-pro-vided capital on which the system: operated until it launched its pri vat: financing, Mr. Cannon said. The bank’s total assets now ex ceed $17,800,000. The source of fun in addition to the sales of debentures include $2,830,000 received from deposits and $2,500,000 frome the sale of stock to member nei, tions, he said. The member associations offer monthly- amortized loans to thousands of persons for the purchase,’ construction, modernization or ree financing of homes.
