Bernie and Colu mnist Score Again
Radio Foes Repeat Feud, With Almost Former Success.
By JAMES THRASHER We movie-goers: have learned to anticipate second servings of successful film ideas with some appre- © hension. But the Winchell-Bernie hostilities, which ‘are renewed at the Indiana this week in “Love and Hisses,” turn out. to be quite as palatable as the team’s initial “Wake | Up and Live.” Maybe we oe is less critical than the ear. I think that people generally Zor a La fed up with the columnist’s and band leader's hisstrionics on the air waves. The same may be said for Eddie Cantor's radio sentimentality. But Mr. Cantor recently came through with a corking comedy in “Ali Baba Goes to Town,” ‘and “Love and Hisses” can be recommended almost as highly: Messrs. Winchell and Bernie go through about the same paces that they did in their first picture. There's even a disappearing act in this one, but Ben -himself, rather than Jack Haley, is the victim.
~ Mustn’t Spoil Climax The climax of Mr. Bernie's “kidnaping” is really too funny to tell here and spoil it for you. In the
meantime, however, the two have!
_ contested over a French singer: (Simone Simon) whom both claim as their discovery. Mr. Winchell says that Mr. Bernie’s Parisian singer is a phoney—sight unseen. So:they let the singer go around to Mr. Win- - chell and persuade him that he dis covered her talent. . - As Yvette Yvette, she gets a tremendous Winchell buildup. Then Ben has the laugh on Walter, but Walter has the last and best one. This picture serves to introduce Miss ‘Simon as a singer. The fact has received almost as big a billing as the memorable occasion when the world learned that “Garbo Talks!” Remember?
Like Minnie Mouse
Miss Simon sings several popular songs as well as some simpier excerpts from the florid “Bell Song” from “Lakme.” We hear that her talent was “discovered” by the late George Gershwin, who heard her humming at a party. (How many musical movie careers, according to publicity departments, have launched ,on the vaporous wings of a hum!) Anyway, Miss Simon is said to
have practiced three or four hours:
a day since then. Now she makes her bow, disclosing a high, thin voice not unlike Minnie Mouse with a French accent.
Bert Lahr, it’s a pleasure to report,
is funnier than the movies usually permit him to be. His partner in ‘comedy is Joan Davis, ' who doesn't once crack herself on the jaw or go careening all over the set on rubber legs. That deserves three bells and four stars. The whole picture moves along with the speed and gaiety which characterizes 20th Century-Fox’ musicals. There are some goodish tunes, and an amusing specialty by that one-ton trio of dusky singers, the Peters Sisters. In addition, and this may interest you more, the Indiana has Norman Alley’s newsreel of the Panay bombing, which opens in Indianapolis three days after Mr: Alley reached the United States with the film, via! China Clipper.
