Loew's Joins ‘Indiana in Plan to Offer | . Single Feature Programs
Circle and
New Year Change Promises Better Fare in Fillers’; : All Three Theaters to Show Films of Gunboat Panay Bombing.
Sha By JAMES THRASHER : Ward Farrar, who manages Loew’s, called up today and said, “You know, we're going to have a single feature next week, 00.” J The reason Mr. Farrar said “too” is because it was announced here yesterday that the Indiana and Circle were going to dispense with that
unaccountably popular two-for-one policy to start the new year.
Now
with Loew's falling into line, it seems that for a week at least, we shall have a réturn to the “good old days” when we could go to see the pictures and still have something left of the evening when we had finished. Without meaning- to slight the —m—""-"-—"-—"—"—"—"—"
main features at all, let’s turn our attention to the short subjects which are being offered in place of. the. now-traditional “B” picture.* All three theaters will have pictures of the Panay bombing, rushed by China Clipper for record distri‘bution. Actual Bombing Shown At the Indiana you may see the three-reel special edition taken by Norman Alley, The Times-Universal cameraman. This is the only newsreel showing the actual bombing. From the embarkation of Americans in Nanking to the Panay’s sinking, Mr. Alley was on hand with his camera. The result has been hailed as one of the most remarkable newsreel “scoops” in cinema history. Mr. Alley arrived in Alameda, Cal, at noon Tuesday. He immediately boarded another plane for the East, where the 4500-foot film was released for public showing. The Fox-Movietone . films which Loew’s and the Circle will show were taken by Eric Mayell, Who was not far behind Mr. Alley in reaching the scene. is to
Loew’s also show a short
“film featuring Robert Benchley in
“How to Start the Day,” and a colod cartoon called “Little Buck Cheeser.” If and when’ the double feature disappears for good in favor of 30-minute “featurettes” or a better sort of short subject, Mr. Benchley should be able to. claim considerable credit for the reversion to former practice. : The famous New York humorist,

though he has scored in full-length movies, has been seen to best advantage in these short subjects of which he is author as well as sole actor. There hasn’t heen much chance for many exhibitors to show these films, because of previous commitment to the double-feature policy. But those patrons who did see Mr. Benchley have raised such a loud cheer that his employers have decided to give the short subject something more than the short end of the deal. M-G-M is now issuing a magazine devoted entirely to its forthcoming two-reelers. Indications are that we shall have more and better “filler” material in the future. The three theaters mentioned, plus the Apollo, will offer midnight shows for those who want a little fevelry of a not too strenuous nature. Loew's is to show “Rosalie” and the Benchley and Alley features at exactly midnight, while:the other three are to exhibit their new attractions at 11:45 p. m.
