‘ChangesOld ‘Epic’ Plot

Western Movie ‘Has Covered Wagons, No Indian Attack. |

By JAMES ‘THRASHER

A movie ‘company, like a baseball pitcher, needs a change of pace. So, right when the weekly crop of farces- was going a bit hysterical, Paramount comes through with a Western saga, “Wells Fargo,” at the Indiana. : The time was ripe for a frontier “gpic,” and “Wells Fargo” ranks among the best.. It has originality, a swift pace, fine photography and fine performances.

abandon some of the canons of horse-opera.- Consequently, one is surprised continually when the obvious does not happen. Think of it—there is a covered wagon train that goes clear to the

Pacific Coast without being at- |}

tacked by Indians! Not a knife is thrown, and the villain and hero don’t engage in a fight {o the death to bring the picture to a head.

Transportation Theme

The main theme, rather; is the absorbing story of American transportation. Relatively speaking, Americans have conquered their vast continent as swiftly. as the airplane now follows the sun from coast. to coast. Accordingly, the story only has. to go back a cenury to the day when a freight and ail service between New York City and Bajavia, N. Y., was a

breathless adventure, and regular |

communication between the East and “St. Louis on the Mississippi,” seemed a brash, if not impossible

’ idea.

The picture follows Ramsay Mec-

Kay from the day when, as a young man, he astonishes Batavia by galloping into town with a barrel of still fresh oysters, to his ‘post-Civil War middle age, when he has helped: to span the country by railroad and pony express. There are various episodes typical of each period represented. We find the part Wells Fargo played in establishing the first overland route from the Mississippi, and its banking service in the days of California’s gold rush. When the Civil War came, it was the same company which fought its own fight in bringing gold from the San Francisco Subtreasury to Washington. And, if the picture is to be credited, Wells Fargo’s swift communication also was a factor in forestalling California’s own backwash support of the secession movement.

There Is Love Story There is, of course, a “love story,” and humor, and more intimate pictures of frontier life. Joel McCrea, Frances Dee and Bob Burns supply the first two ingredients. But Mr. Lloyd has handled his episodic treatment with such skill that we don’t find action flying out the window when love comes in the door. The humor, too, is in character. It’s all left up to Mr. Burns and

his silent partner, Pawnee (Bernard There are no barn dances

Robin from the Ogzarks triumphs in his own particular way. , Mr.. McCrea and Miss ‘Dee are excellent. They are given unfailingly able assistance in a large cast from which Henry O'Neill, Ralph Morgan, Mary Nash and Robert Cummings might be singled out for special praise. A succession of big pictures through the years may have dulled our wonder, if not our admiration. But I think you’ll find “Wells Fargo” one of the better pictures in its

Eddie Duchin's Orchestra to Play at White House, Now That Dinner Bid Is Included.

EW YORK, Dec, 24—It seems that Eddie Duchin is one band leader who cloesn’t jump like a trained seal at an offer to play at an important social function.

Mr. Duchin didn’t commit Himself one way or another when asked by Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. to play at the engagement party of his brother John and Ann Lindsay Clark in the White House, Dec. 30. Most. orchestra leaders would have seized at fhe chance; Mr. Duchin didn’t, though his reluctance had little to do with his opinions of the New Deal. * Well, tlie other morning, while Mr. Duchin was slumbering, the telephone rang in his apartment. Ordinarily he leaves orders not to

ese. silk trade. z There has been much response except from Frances Farmer, who is playing in “Golden Boy.” She had been concealing her pretty legs in lislé during the last several weeks. But the other night, blond and pretty Miss Farmer found a snag in her last pair. Curtain time was a half hour away and there wasn’t an open shop nearby, . In desperation ‘Miss Farmer phoned the League. And by fast messenger, a lisle pair arrived at the 11th hour. Miss Farmer displayed no silk and the Japanese lost a deisive battle that night at the Beasco. ‘

this time, his servants disobeyed the standing rule. They awakened him, and Mr. Duchin mumbled a drowsy helio.

“This,” said the voice on the other end of the wire, “is Eleanor mae Roosevelt. It would make me happy 2 ‘ : if your orchestra could play at my | EEE" SHES" SHES SHES" GHED SHED ¢ son's engagement party. Please come earlier for dinner.” CHEZ od AREE + Having heard the solicitious note 1h stairs Apollo Theatre Bldg in the voice of the First Lady, Bandmaster Duchin had no further hesitation. .-
