Connie Mack,
Connie Mack of the Philadelphia Athletics . . . 75 years young and going strong.
at 75, One
Of Games Busiest Men
By HARRY GRAYSON NEA Service Sports Writer
PHILAD: ‘celebrated his 75th birthday today.
ELPHIA, Dec. 23.—The amazing figure that is Connie Mack
Imagine it, a man who has played 4 full nine innings every day for three-quarters of a century, not only actively managing a major league baseball club, but running its business office as well.
Jimmy Dykes, boss of the Chicago®
White Sox and one of Mack’s many proteges, who resides in nearby Upper Darby, recently visited the venerable leader of the Philadelphia Athletics. Mack told Dykes, of whom he is ‘very fond, that during the sick spell from which he now is recovering, he feared that he wouldr’t reach 75, but now that he is going to celebrate that milestone, he’s positive : that he’ll reach 80.
Mack has no thought of retiring. ~He couldn’t stand idleness. Being in the thick of things keeps him going. Baseball's Grand Old Man will make the Southern training jaunt to Lake Charles, La., and intends to guide his boys, as he calls them, throughout the 1038 campaign, , making all trips, unless an unfore- ! seen development crops up. His health is the only thing that will halt the tall tactician.
Hepe Springs Eternal
Mack suffered no ill effects from his journey to the major league meetings in Chicago. In fact, he felt better. Baseball and the conversation it develops is life itself to the youngest old gentleman that you'll ever meet. Mack is getting stronger every day despite loss of weight, and though his family urges him to go to Flor- * ida, he will remain in Philadelphia all winter. ." “There is too much to be done,” he beams. Mack can be reached in the Ath‘Jetics’ offices at Shibe Park daily now, after being confined to his home for two months. He dictated letters and arranged the Athletics’ Spring training schedule while in
Plans Quiet Observance :
Mack’s bisthaay was to be quietly ,celebrated with his large family at ‘his Germantown home, with the real blowout due when the Philadelphia sports Writers honor him ‘at their annual dinner, Jan. 25. Al Horwits, president of that fine organization, can be depended upon to see that this splendid character hears all the nice things that should be said about him. - Mr. Mack, as he is addressed by ‘everybody, is to spend money, will not sell stars, and still
-step,” Allison warned. -
hopes to obtain some first class athletes. He wants another winner before his days are concluded, and believes that hell haye a great club in 1940.
ALLISON DISPLEASED BY BEARS’ WORKOUT
BERKELEY, Cal., Dec. 23 (U. P.). —Coach Stub Allison today threatened to shake up the University of California football varsity unless the Bolden Bears come into condition faster for their game with Alabama on New Year’s Day. Yesterday's practice left Allison dissatisfied with his Western Rose Bowl entry. Passing defense featured the workout. “The first team better watch its “The second team right now is showing a lot more than the first.” The Bears will have two more days of heavy scrimmage before the Christmas holidays. Practice resumes at Pasadena next week.

MEXICO CITY, Dec 23 (U P.)— Cecil Smith, one of the two polo players in the United States topranked at 10 goals, will be out of the game for the next six or seven weeks with a fractured left collar bone, his physician said today.

SWINDLER IS GIVEN 1-T0-T-YEAR TERM
Pleads Guilty to Violating Security Statutes.
William Everett, one of two men accused of having duped elderly Indiana widows. out of about $100,000, was given a one-to-seven-year sentence and fined $10 in Williamsport, the State Securities Commission reported today. Arrested in Iaanapolis Oct. 19, Everett entered a guilty plea. to charges of violating the State’s security statutes. His alleged partner, W. E. Saylor, arrested here a few days ago, is facing similar charges in Lawrenceburg. Despite the conviction, Commission investigators indicated Everett also might be made to stand trial in Lawrenceburg. Commission investigators said the
men won the confidence of elderly | H
widows, who gave them stock on the promise that they would convert these securities into more valuable holdings. Affidavits under which they were arrested charged the men with selling the stocks and keeping the money.
FLAMES CONSUME HOME FURNISHINGS
Apartment Dweller Counts $3000. Damage.
William T. Hall, president of the Hall Optical Co. today estimated damage done to furniture in his apartment, 1321 N. Meridian 8t., by a fire last night at $3000. Mr. and Mrs. Hall were in the kitchen when all lights went out. They smelled smoke and investigated to find the living room ablaze. They quickly threw several articles of furniture out the’ ninth floor window, together with some rugs and draperies. Meanwhile, William Fisher, custodian, learning of the fire, went to the apartment and took their Scotty dog downstairs to safety.
The Halls had moved into the|
apartment Nov. 1 and Mrs. Hall said she had just completed furnishing it yesterday. It is believed the fire started from faulty wiring.
