Antilynching Bill Foe Admits

i

Measure Cannot Be Defeated

A © By DANIEL M. KIDNEY

rs ‘Times Staff Writer 3 WASHINGTON, Dec. 22.—Senator Connally’s (D. Tex.) last minute

criticism of the plan to take up the antilynching bill on Jan, 6 indicates “that there is ample votes for passage of the measure, Senator VanNuys |

{D. Ind.) asserted today.

2 Hoosier Senator is coauthor® vith Senator Wagner (D. N. Y.) of * the Senate bill, which has been _substituted for the one which the House already has passed. When Floor Leader Barkley (D. Ky) made a unanimous consent motion to act on the bill Jan. 6, he

pe

was backed up by Senator VanNuys. The latter explained that under an agreement reached last session the antilynching bill was to be taken up after passage of farm| legislation, but he and Senator Wagner had

1

agreed to:let tiie housing bill pro‘ceed in the special session. Senator Connally, who had scheduled a Christmas holiday trip with a Senate subcommittee to Puerto Rico, expressed. his wrath at the Jan. 6 date. He indicated that he would be back in time to fight the bill's passage. “1t seems thal whatever suits Senators Wagner and VanNuys is taken to be the will of the Senate by the leadership,” Senator Connally shouted. ; “1 am not gojng to object to the unanimous corsent agreement, but I am in no mood to be making any pledges. Sooner or later you are going to lynch us under the name of antilynching. But I don’t approve of the tactics.” The Texan has been one of the

leaders of the Southern bloc oppos- ' the bill by filibuster. : “This agreement was made to pre-/| vent further filibustering at the special session,” Senator VanNuys afterward explained. “There will be no question about passing the antilynching bill at the regular session, ase it is apparent that its greatest opponents now admit defeat.”

VanNuys Renomination Predicted by Barnard

Times Special WASHINGTON, Dec. 22.—George M. Barnard, Indianapolis attorney and Senator VanNuys’' former law

‘partner predicted - today that the

latter will be renominated by the

Indiana Democrats. = -

Prominent in Republican politics in Indiana, Mr. Barnard has been mentioned as a possible G. O. P. Senate nominee. unlikely that he would ryn against Senator VanNuys, however. They are

close personal friends and he visited the Senator here. : “In Indiana the Democrats dislike Republicans so much that they will be willing to bury the hatchet

and renominate VanNuys in order

to win,” Mr. Barnard predicted. He termed his visit here a “business and social trip” and explained he will spend Christmas with four

daughters now living at Philadel-|
