+ HUGE INCREASES < IN NAVAL FORGE - LIKELY IN 1938)
lane’ S Review view Still Lacks Information on Ships Of Japan.
LONDON, Dec. 21 (U. P.)—The "1937 edition of Jane's Fighting Ships, the authoritative annual review of world navies, revealed today that huge increases in naval armaments are still in progress. The book for the first time gave
3" much information about Russian = and German warships, but :infor-
mation from Japan was noticeably
+ Scanty.
Since last year, Britain made a net gain of 73 warships of all classes: Germany, 85; Italy, 127, mostly submarines; Russia, - 89; France, four: United States, two. The report on Japan indicated: a loss of six. The editor said in his introductory comment: “The flood of orders for new war-
"ships is not abating. In the whole
world, scarcely a naval power of any importance has not felt impelled to join the common impulse to bring its fleet up to date. But for the shortage of skilled labor and materials, naval construction would be still greater.”

plans for remodeling an old home is to be shown. Fast freezing is to be discussed by K. 1. Fawcett of the Purdue Horticultural Department Jan. 12. The preservation of fruits and
“vegetables by fast freezing is as
practical as canning, Mr. Fawcett said. Preezing is within the reach of any grower living near 8 cold storage plant. Studies by agricultural experts show that the quality of any canned

Termed Vital in Shaping British Holy Land Policy
Palestine Has Immense |
Strategic Value, Miller Says. =
(Second of a ny :
By WEBB MILLER United Press European News Manager (World Copyright, 1937, by United Press) JERUS , VIA LONDON, Dec. 21 ‘—Representatives of the British Empire in this land where Christ was born view the coming of another Christmas week and a new year of the Christian era with frank misgiv. ine bin of the Suez Canal, jugular vein of the Empire and of Britain's vital sea and air communications with India, Australia and the Far East, figures as one of the fundamental considerations under-
lying future British policy toward
Arabs and Jews in Palestine. The recrudescence of the Arab rebellion at a moment when Britain was considering a proposal to divide Palestine between the Jews and
Arabs while maintaining a British |
mandate over holy places fixed attention upon the imperial factors involved and will weigh heavily in any final determination of Palestine’s fate. Lying on the flanks of the junction ‘of three continents—Europe, Africa and Asia—Palestine occupies a position of immense strategic value in safeguarding Britain's position in’ the eastern Mediterranean, where ‘her former predominance is far less sure since Italy’s rise as an important military, naval, air and colonial power whose communications with her Ethiopian empire lie athwart Britain's. Italy Has Desires ~ This aspect of the Palestine ques- | tion naturally is seldom discussed because of the conditions under which Britain was given its mandate over the Holy Land. Italy’s increasingly evident desire to exercise influence in Moslem regions, which are under British tutelage, are giving Downing Street and the imperial staff food for thought. Since Britain relaxed her hold upon Egypt, Palestine’s significance from the viewpoint of defense of her routes of Empire has widened considerably. The Suez Canal and Egypt lie only an hour’s flight from the British airdromes in Palestine. Alexandria, Britain's present principal naval base, is only two hours distant. An overland motor route through the desert to Asia also starts in Palestine, and the region is crossed by British and other international airlines to India, Australia and the Far East. ~ ‘These considerations explain partly Britain's heavy expenditures for development of the harbor of Haifa which could, if necessary, serve as an auxiliary naval base dominating, together with Cyprus and Alexandria, the entire eastern end of the Mediterranean. Pipe Line Is Vital
© Equally important is the protection of the Iraq Petroleum Co.'s oil pipe line, the British section of
Webb Miller
which ends at Haifa and through!
which pours constantly a stream of oil from hundreds of miles away. The 12-inch line is laid across Pal-
estine ‘and the deserts of Transjordania end Iraq. The oil it brings
to Haifa is vital for Britain's in-
dustry, navy and amr force. “Thus a combination of imperial, strategic: and industrial interests dominates the entire Palestine question, adding to the complexity of Britain’s attempss to keep wartime promises to both Jews and Arabs while executing the League mandate to the satisfaction of other powers and at the same time safeguarding her own interest. One aspect of the proposal to establish an. independent Jewish state on “he shores of the Mediterranean, ‘which is not absent from the minds of some Jewish as well as Arab leaders,. was expressed in a statement, by Mrs. Edgar Dugdale, niece ani biographer of the late Lord Balfour, author of the Balfour

If the Jewish: state were founded we might expect ‘that within the next 10 years 2,000,000 Jewish young men and women would settle the couniry.
