Griswold. Despairs of Action; ‘Petticoat Rule’ Gets Blame.

: Times Special WASHINGTON, Dec. 21. —Resentment against “petticoat rule” in both the House Labor Committee and the Labor Department. has re-' sulted from the special session de-

_feat of the wages and hours: bill by ‘recommital, it was learned today.

Many male congressmen, some of whom are members of the Labor Committee, are scoring both Rep. * Mary. T. Norton (D. N. J.), committee chairman, and Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins. Between the two women the bill was wrecked, they contend. Rep. Glenn Griswgld, Indiana member of the Labor Committee, said today. that he .despairs of ‘bringing out a successful wages and hours bill from the Committee as it is now organized. He again will offer his own measure for a 40 cents an hour minimum wage and 44 hours maximum week, he said. He handled the American Federation of Labor - substitute measure which is similar, except for a 49-hour week, when it was defeated on the floor.

‘Jitters to Continue’

“My bill was rejected by the committee, the A. PF. of L. bill was voted down on the floor and the so-called Administration bill would have been voted down also except that many opposing Democrats did not want to g0 on record,” Rep. Griswold said. “Upshot is that business can continue to have the jitters while the committee and Congress fools around discussing wages and hours next session. 1 was for wages and hours legislation long before many of the members heard about it and still am. But I want a bill that will be fair to labor and not hurt business either.” Rep. Griswold was one of the seven Hoosiers who voted against recommitting the bill, although he had opposed it and offered his own substitute previously. “Bad as it is, I think we should hsve enacted it into law so that business would know what to expect,” he explained.

Mrs. Ann Maloof, soprano soloist in the Home Presbyterian Church choir, is to sing “Sleep, O Little One, Sleep” in the choir’s cantata, “The Christmas Hallelujah,” Friday night in the church at 31st and Rader Sts. -

4 COUNTIES VIE FOR FRAUD CASE

Local Grand Jury. Probes - Alleged $17,000 Swindle.

An alleged $17,000 swindle was being investigated by .the Marion County Grand Jury today.

The investigation followed the arrest by State police last week of William Edward Saylor, 35-year-old alleged confidence man, charged in affidavits with swindling $76,675 from elderly Indiana persons. It was believed the Grand Jury action indicated authorities would seek to try Saylor on the alleged swindles here. Authorities in Dearborn and Shelby counties also seek to prosecute Saylor. The local swindles attributed to Saylor by police involve two elderly women. The alleged thefts were perpetrated through stock “switch and sell” schemes. State police said. Saylor was taken to Lawrenceburg shortly after his arrest to await trial on larceny charges pending there. Prosecutor Spencer said if no case is made against Saylor in Lawrence-
