WATCHMAN DROWNS IN MAKING ROUNDS

Henry Boehm, 67-year-old night watchman, drowned early today while making his rounds at the Langsenkamp-Wheeler Brass Works, 1200 Shelby St. Police found him where he had fallen into an ash-pit partly filled with water. Dr. Frank Ramsey, deputy coroner, said he apparently had slipped. The alarm was turned in when he did not check in on a call box. Mr. Boehm, lived at 3115 E. New York St. >

WHITE WILL LEAD LIBERAL COALITION

Protection of Labor Rights Claimed as Platform.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 20 (U. P.) — A liberal coalition representing the church, education and the general public emerged today under the leadership of William Allen White

in a movement to protect guarantees that labor may bargain collectively and freely organize into unions. Mr. White, famous Kansas editor, is temporary chairman of the policy board of an organization called the “American Association for Economic Freedom.” His vice chairman is W. Jett Lauck, chief economist for John Lewis’ United Mine Workers and adviser to the Committee for Industrial Organization. Appearance of Mr. White in the leadership of a movement opposed to “vigilante” groups and “citizens committees” which have been fighting C. 1. O. organizing activities gave the coalition a possible political significance. It was recalled that. he recently indorsed Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia of New. York for the Republican Presidential nomination in 1940.

Mr. White has been a leader among G. O. P. Liberals for many years. LaGuardia is a member of the American Labor Party which appears now to hold the balance of power in New York City. The A. L. P. is an affiliate of Labor’s Nonpartisan League, political arm of the C. 1. O. Cardinal plank of the new association is “that, if American political democracy is to be preserved, it must be supplemented by sound measures -and guarantees of industrial democracy and must be widely extended to safeguard the future of the democratic tradition.”
