P.).—Stocks "drifted irregularly. lower in quiet trading

today. Steel, motor and metal {ing

shares were. softer, but most other sections -were mixed.

U.S. Bteel “fluctuated narrowly

around its initial level and showed 5 loss to 577% at midsession. Bethlehem, Youngstown and Republic

had fractional losses. Chrysler eased

more than a point and. then halved the loss -at 55%. : General ‘Motors was down % to 33%.. ‘Anaconda sold off, a point ‘to 31%, while International Nickel, Kennecott and. Cerro de Pasco had losses ranging .to nearly a point. Gold mining shares were an exception, Dome rising % point to a new high t 54. 3 Rails were mixed. Atchison and Union Pacific had small gains, but New York Central and Southern Pacific hovered ‘slightly below the previous close.: Among utilities Con-. solidated Edison and Electric’ -Power & Light had small losses, while North American and Public Service were steady. NEW YORK, Dec: 17 (U. P).— The annual Steel-irigorproducing

ent to 1204 pounds for each inhabitant. lowest since 1929, according to a compilation issued ‘today by Ihe. American Iron & Steel Instiute.’ The steel industry had:-an aggregate capacity of 63,067,500 gross: tons

pounds per capita, while. operating, in the first half of the year; ‘at 96 per cent of capacity. Peak of steel capacity per’ capita came in 1933 when the industry had equipment for producing annually 1236 pounds of ingots for each pers son in the country. Since'that year, capacity per capita has dropped 2% per ceni, while output per capita has almost doubled.
