Belle Didjah, the American solo dancer, who made a successful London debut the other night at the Westminster Theater, is one of the few glish-speaking civilians who have seen the Queen recently. And, acocrding to what she was told by palace attendants, Queen Marie is suffering from a mild form of phlebitis. “I had given a private recital in Rumania which was attended by one [of the ladies-in-waiting to Queen Marie,” said Miss Didjah. “Not long after, I was summoned to her palace for what is called in royalty-ruled, European countries a ‘command performance.’ In England [such performances are given in theaters and opera houses, the royal patrons attending, along with the public. =

At a fixed hour one morning a royal automobile called for me at my hotel. As we swung into the palace grounds, smart sentries sprang to attention and saluted. It put me into a blue funk, because I was wondering how one greeted royalty and how one should behave generally. But the Queen put me at ease. I was ushered into a big handsome room where she was lying propped up in bed. She extended her hand to me and gripped mine firmly, saying: “ ‘How do you do? I am so pleased to see you!’” “Well, after that, all one had to

I thought that was about enough as I did not want to tire an invalid. But it seems that the Queen had a full set of photographs in my various dances. So sh said she wanted something from my American repertoire, especially those called ‘Impressions of New York.’ So I danced ‘Oh, Harlem!’ ' “‘Yes, I know Harlem, she said after it was over. ‘I went there during my visit in America.’ “For a finale I did ‘Subway Angel,’ which pictures in & dance a loudly-dressed girl in the subway train who tries desperately to flirt with a man, only to learn to her disgust that her efforts have been wasted, as the intended victim is blind. | During all this dance I am

PAY BILL ALARMS FILM MAKERS §

Fear Act May Endanger Huge Investments in Child Stars.

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 17 (U, P.).— Motion picture executives were alarmed today by the prospect that Congress might pass the Wages and Hours Bill and outlaw the acting of such child stars as Shirley Temple. The bill in its present form would prohibit the sale in interstate commerce of any product made with the aid" of children under 16 years of age. Anxiety increased in the movie colony when it was learned that Congress had- rejected a proposed amendment that would have released screen youngsters from the child labor provisions of the bill. The studios have millions of dollars invested in present and future Shirley Temples, Freddie Bartholomews, nna Durbins and others, and" have been reaping rich profits from the investments. Studio executives began sending telegrams to southern California’s representatives in Congress and to Senator McAdoo, begging for some
