FRIDAY, DEC. 17, 1987 Gifts Child Can Make Suggested

Keep Youngsters Occupied Before Holiday.

By OLIVE ROBERTS BARTON

Half the fun of Christmas is getting ready for it, as everyone knows. It is hardly fair for grownups to have their mysterious secrets and plans and bustling about, while the’ children count endless days and wish it were time for Santa to/come. So let us see how we can occupy the small folk, during the waiting weeks, as well as help them to make their gifts economically. | Oil cloth makes grand presents. Not the dull old stuff we used to

kitchen tables, but the gay heartsome material that comes today in every color combination under the sun, |

Oil Cloth Table Matis

Perhaps Jeanie wants to give Aunt Martha a present, and Aunt Martha's breakfast room is blue and white. Get Jeanie a yard of oilcloth with almost any design you want, and show the little girl how to cut out circles, by placing a large plate on the wrong side and going around it with a pencil. These mats can be scalloped, “pinked” or saw-edged, and behold—it’s a set of breakfast mats that even fastidious Aunt Martha will not be ashamed to use. Larger mats can be made for toast plates and bacon platters. Out oilcloth also ean be made bib . One oblong for tiny Cousin Sally’s tray and another for her bib, an. arc cut from the latter to fit around her neck, and taped to

tie. Light-pulls are another thing that most children can make. Girls can make a chain with a chochet hook and coarse embroidery thread, finished off with a tassel made by winding thread around ga playing card, cutting and tying. Boys can a heavy thread. These are particularly useful in bathrooms, where light fixtures should never be touched with wet hands. 2 There are numerous things to paint. And paint today is something wonderful indeed. The new enamels dry quickly, and flowerpots, cans, boxes and even cartons can be made into attractive ornaments for sunporches. Add a design ‘of stencil work, or a pasted picture, brushed over. with clear shellac, and youll have all kinds of presents.

Young Seamstresses Needlework has not gone out of style. Any child who can run a hem can make an apron, either out of a bandana handkerchief, or a bit of cretonne. Cut material twenty inches square, round bottom edge and run two small vertical darts at waistline. Add a tie, and there you are. I advise curving the top a little, as it helps. Any kind of bag can be made from gay leftovers. Prints are best for Christmas, or anything with color.. There are shoe bags, broom bags, laundry bags and so on. Just pieces of material cut long and folded over and sewed. A casing at the top for draw-stri is necessary. There also the “stocking” toys for little folk. Cut off foot, sew at top, invert, stuff with cotton, and sew shut. | Then use your imagina-

make cats, dolls or rabbits, by cleverly tying in. the right places, painting faces, braiding tails or sewing on “arms,” as the “subject” requires. x

Mince Pies Help Create ~ Yule Spirit Famous Restaurant Chef

Gives Formula for His Pastry.

By MRS. GAYNOR MADDOX

Here’s a recipe in the true Christmas spirit. The chef of a: famous

| restaurant, noted for its mince meat

pies, gave it to me even though he wants to sell all the pies he can.

Mince Meat Pie

One chopped apple, 72 cup seeded raisins, chopped, % cup currants, % cup butter, 1 tablespoon molasses, 1 tablespoon boiled cider, 1 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 3: teaspoon powdered cloves, % nutmeg, grated, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 cup’ chopped cooked meat, % ‘cup brandy, stock or canned consomme to moisten. Mix all ingredients except the meat, and simmer an hour. Add meat and cook 15 minutes. Prepare a tender pie crust, as follows: One and one-half cups ' pastry flour, ¥% teaspoon salt, ¥% cup lard or other shortening, ice water. Mix salt with flour. Reserve 2 tablespoons lard. With finger tips, case knife or pastry mixer, blend rest of lard with flour, then moisten dough with ice water. Place on floured board. Pat lightly. Roll out, again rolling gently. Line a pie plate pie crust, rolled to % inch thickness. Fill with mince meat, then fold other half of the pie crust, also rolled to 1 inch thickness, over the top of pie. Press edges together with fork dipped in water. Then trim edges. Prick top crust with fork to permit escape of steam. Brush lightly with milk or egg white if glaze is desired. If you buy your plum pudding ready to heat, as so many wise housewives do these days, you may want a brandy sauce with it. Brandy Sauce.

with lemon juice and boiling water. Put on stove and boil for:3 minutes. Remove and add brandy. =~ . Atter all, despite the traditions ‘of plum pudding and mince pie,’ there’s lot to be said in favor of vanilla ice cream and hot black cherries for Christmas gala dinner. Called Cherries Jubilee, this remarkable recipe is his Christmas gift to ‘us hungry lesser. mortals

great New York hotel. Cherries Jubilee : Cherries Jubilee is made with fresh black cherries, but jumbo canned black cherries can be used with delicious results, too. Turn the cherries: into a chafing dish with a very little finely crushed tapioca to thicken the syrup and still leave. it clear and colorful. Just before serv=ing, add two more tablespoons of the finest sherry. Then comes the dramatic moment. Pour this regal con-

ice cream placed in shallow bowls of clear glass. Serve at once. How do you make hard sauce? ‘That's a truly Christmas question and the answer is. in the :same

spirit. Christmas Hard Sauce One-half cup butter, 1 cup brown sugar 3 tablespoons brandy. Cream butter and sugar until as smooth as thick cream. Add brandy, bit by bit. Do not under any circumstances add all the brandy at once. Serve in large spoonfuls atop each hot serving of flaming plum pudding.
