MEN GOSSIPERS
' Too Much Talk Blamed for | Troubles of World.
PUEBLO, Col, Dec. 17 (U. P).— Mer gossip more—ana worse—than women ever thought of doing, Dr. Will Gordon told his First Baptist Church congregation here in a sermen in which he traced the cause of the troubles of the world to “too much talk.” “Even in the unhappy accom-
ae
plishments which are supposed to pe all womanish — gossip, for instance—men are far and away the greatest offenders,” the minister said. “Men gossip more, * gossip worse—and about worse subjects— than women ever do.” : Dr. Gordon asserted that “too much talk is the root of all human strife and inhuman cruelty and offered to right the current wrongs of civilization by imposing a seven day “gospel of absolute silence” over the entire world.”
“Talk Too Much”
“The trouble with people in Pueblo and Colorado and in the nation and world at large is that people talk too much. The American home is in a bad way. because of too much talk. Business is bad because Of too much talk. The
' church has been cheapened by too |
muca alk. “Talk brought about the war In Spain and between Japan and China. “There is but one way out of this thralldom bf human strife. If I could have my way about it, I would impose the gospel of absolute silence on the entire world for seven days. “True, it, would be a hardship for every one, but what America needs is deliverance from its own tongue and what the world needs is the same deliverance and that for the sake of world peace.”

UNDERWRITERS STRIKE AT WAR
Refuse Risk Insurance as All but U. S. Firms Co-operate.
LONDON, Dec. 17 (U. P.).—Perhaps the most remarkable blow yet struck against war is that of the combined fire insurance companies representative of the entire world, except the United States, which have joined in a common agreement refusing to write any insurance, whether direct or by way of re-

insurance, against the risk of war on land. Adherents to this singular international agreement include not only 127 British companies (including Dominion and Colonial companies) and Lloyd’s underwriters but also more than 50 French companies, some 15 leading German companies and the principal Italian concerns doing business outside Italy. Business in Germany itself is already taken care of by legislation, and the formal adhesion of - the entire Federation of Italian companies is expected shortly. In addition, the pact covers the fire insurance companies of Belgium, Switzerland, Greece and the Scandinavian countries. The position in the Baltic countries and in Central Europe has not yet been regularized though correspondence

is said to be proceeding. Czechoslovakia ard Rumania, for example, have not yet completed their arrangements, either among themselves or with their re-insurers.
Burden on Governments
Thus if Europe increases its drift toward war, the business communities of all the belligerents know today that they must meet their own losses from bombing as best they can, or alternatively look for compensation to their Governments, meny of which in the event of war would be more or less bankrupt. Knowing that, the hope is that they will actively exert themselves to prevent such a calamity. This. movement among fire insurance companies is less than 10 months old but it has already swept virtually the entire fire insurance world except the United States and

Canada. (Canadian companies have signed the agreement so far as their foreign business is concerned.) In the literally flaming Far East, insurance companies of Japan, China and the Dutch East Indies and the Philippines have signed, while the adhesion of other Far Eastern companies awaits the decision of the United States companies with whom they are in competition. In Central and , South America acherents include Mexico, Argen= tine, Chile, Colombia and Peru. The Brazilian companies are still discussing it. ; In short, the only important abstainers are the 20 odd American companies doing ‘a foreign insurance business, and even they have, in effect, agreed to it so far as their Cuban business goes.
