Maury Learns Who's Guardian Angel for ‘Boners’ in Speech

WASHINGTON, ‘Dec. 16 (U. P.).—A question that may have puzzled the constitutents of some Congressmen in moments of extreme leisure was answered today by Rep. Maury Maverick (D. Tex.). .

The Question—How cana man<

who uses expressions like “I ain't got” and “he done went” in campaign talks -make speeches in the House that read in the Congres- _ sional Record like the product of a statesman and a scholar?

>

Thé Answer—The official reporters |

and the Congressional Record proof readers correct ‘em. Old-timers around Washington have known this for a'long time, but

to Maverick this was a thing he never knew till now. He found it out when he made a floor speech referring to “David’s coat of many colors.” It came out in the record as “Joseph’s coat of many colors.” David, you remember, was the lad with the sling shot. : Rep. Maverick was delighted to have his error corrected. “I asked,” he said, “for a report,

and which was sent to me as folows.” : : How About This, Maury?

(Editor's Note: The Congressional Record proof reader would have caught that ‘“and which,” Maury.) : Here is the report Rep. Maverick got from the Government Printing Office: | a “It would not be right to give the name of the reader in this particular case as it would single him out for commendation at the expense of many of his fellow workmen who have made as good or better catches. ° “The error in question was corrected by a common ordinary proof reader. Offhand it is difficult to recall errors in copy which have been corrected, as they include wrong dates, names misspelled, historical

@ events garbled, incorrect quotations, e

“Recently the copy referred to ‘Bancroft’s ghost,” when Banquo was the party referred to. We ,also had Hobson sinking the Merrimac in Manila Bay.”

WALLIS MAY RECEIVE H.R. H. TITLE, IS VIEW

London Paper Takes Stand After Burke Study.

LONDON, Dec. 16 (U. P.).—The Duchess of Windsor may yet be given the title “Her Royal Highness” despite the letters of patent issued last May forbidding her or her children the title, the current issue of News Review said today.

“The distinct possibility / arose this week that Her Grace, the Duchess of Windsor, would yet be

honored by the title Her Royal Highness,” News Review said. “This appeared from a study of the 1938 volume of Burke's Peerage, the aristocrats’ bible. ; “In it the Duke is ranked socially as the King's youngest brother, making him tourth man in the land. His wife is listed last- or the 29th duchess in the order cf creation.”

News Review said that with the

social standing the Duchess of Windsor could be permitted to style herself H. R. H. without automatically acquiring seniority over her royal sister-in-law, the Duchess of Kent.
