LETTERS FROM INDIANA ATTACK COAL MINIMUMS

VanNuys Says Complaints May Be Made at -. Hearing Dec. 21.

Times Special 3 WASHINGTON, Dec. 16.—Senator VanNuys said today he had received numerous letters from Indi-

ana expressing dissatisfaction of consumers with the coal prices fixed _ by the National Bituminous Coal Commission, The prices in Indiana and elsewhere become effective today, but consumers will be given an opportunity to make formal complaint and cite specific instances of grossly iricreased costs at a hearing here Dec. 21, Senator VanNuys said. This hearing was- obtained by John Carson, consumers®counsel of the Commission, who requested: in his petition that the data upon which prices have been based be mate public.

Mr. Carson is a former Indian- ||

apolis newspaperman and for many years was secretary to the late Sen-

ator James Couzens of Michigan, Members of the co jon, in- |g

cluding Pleas Greenlee of Indiana, will sit at the hearing.

Miners to Get Old Rates

“I have talked to Commissioner Greenlee and he told me that the prices were set tentatively and will be changed if consumers can offer valid objections to them,” Senator VanNuys said. Meanwhile, the Commission has ruled that the half million or more coal miners can continue to get coal from their companies at the old rates and negd not pay the new price scale. This action was taken when it was learned that most miners have

an agreement with the mine. where |

. they are employed to obtain their household cpal free or at low cost. Asks Suspension Jonas Waffle, managing director of Bituminous Coal Ppoducers Board in Indiana, appeared here to ask that published minimum prices on State coal moving into the Indianapolis industrial. area be suspended ‘if the Commission rules it has jurisdiction over intra-state ¢oal in Indiana. Unless this is ddne, coal shipped into the state from river elevators at Cincinnati, Evansville and Jeffersonville will have a competitive advantage, he contended. He also asked suspension of prices on Indiana coal moving into six northwestern market areas, including Minneapolis, St. Paul, Madison, ‘ Wis, Duluth and the upper part of : . North Dakota. : Large accumulations of coal © stocks on the docks of Lakes Michigan, Erie and Superior will be sold without regard to the minimum price schedule and Indiana pro-

1937

ducers will be at a Slisadvantage, he said. He appeared also for ‘several companies asking adjustment on railroad fuel prices. Senator VanNuys also said today he would not join the Judiciary subcommittee to which he was appointed on its Puerto Rico inspection trip over the Christmas holidoys. Headed by Senator Edward R. Burke (D. Neb.), the eomfuittee will sail Dee. 23. “I am going out to Indiana instead,” Senator VanNuys declared.

Coal Commission Denies

Railroads’ Plea

' WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 (U. P.). —The railroads lost a last-minute attempt today to reduce expenditures in the face of decreasing revenues. The National Bituminous Coal Commission denied the plea of the American Association of Railroads for a stay of minimum price schedules on soft coal consumed by locomotives. The Commission ruled that there was not sufficient reason

given by the petitioners for delay-|

ing application of the schedules, most of which become effective today. The Commission also denied the

petition of the State of New York and the Associsited Industries of New York on tke same grounds. By placing the price scales in the soft coal industry into operation the Federal Government emparked on its first venture in the realm of fixing prices of commodi-

ties. The order, which became effective

‘at 12:01 a. m., made all coal pro-

duced by operators abiding by the terms of the gct through signing

codes promulgated by the Commis- |

sion, subject to Federal regulation. Producers who do not conform to code standards are subjected to a
