Joe Gets Lowdown on Grid Greats From a Cameraman

By JOE WILLIAMS Times Special Writer NEW YORK, Dec. 16.—Our Mr. Bill Greene who has been shooting sports stars for many a long semester was talking about some of his noble subjects today. | “You find some guys who will pose all day long for you,” said Mr. reene, “and again you find some who wouldn’t have posed for Rembrandt.” Looking back on his recent activities, Mr. Greene was certain the most gracious subject he had in football was Alexander Wojciecho.wicz, Fordham’s All-America cener. “There wasn’t anything that fellow wouldn't do for the camera- | men,” said Mr. Greene. “And he | didn’t seem to be a publicity hound, either. He was just downright agree- | able and he seemed to realize the | cameramen had a job to do and he | tried to co-operate.” It develops not all of the college greats view the labors of the cameramen with the same sympathetic feeling. “Now there's Clint Frank at Yale. He’s just the opposite of Wojie. A different type, too, I guess. Very serious about everything. He'll give you one pose and then tell you that’s enough. . . . ‘I can’t hold up my practice on the field,’ hell say. “I don’t hold that against im. I can imagine practice is mighty important. I'm merely pointing out the difference in these two AllAmerica stars as I found them on the field. Yet they tell me off the field, Frank will pose all day for you. I guess his responsibilities don’t ~ worry him then.” Mr. Greene has reached the conclusion that the head coach has something to do with the way the young football gods react to picture ‘requests. . . . “I don’t know what the answer is but some coaches try to keep you from photographing their stars. Maybe this is to guard against the inflated bean, or maybe it’s just superstition.” Wouldn’t Spoil Biggie Anyway, Mr. Greene found it extremely difficult to get any pictures of the Dartmouth ball carriers—and once after making a special trip to New Haven Mr. Red Blaik refused to permit him to take any shots of the squad at all. . . . “He wouldn't even pose himself, so you can see he wasn’t playing any favorites.” It seems that Mr. Jock Sutherland is occasionally addicted to similar moods. When the Pittsburghs appeared here for the Fordham game the cameramen wanted to do some very elegant stuff on Biggie Goldberg but the good doctor vetoed the inspiration; the boys

Kautskys Await Fast Akron Five

The Firestones of Akron, one of the country’s outstanding pro teams, is to oppose the Kautsky A. C.’s in a National Basketball League game here Suhday afternoon at the Armory. The Ohioans' are one of the rangiest teams in the pro game, most of them tepping the six-foot mark. Slim Shoun, center of the quintet, is six feet, 11 inches. The locals scored an easy 59-to-34 victory over the Chicago Crusaders in a nonconference game at Noblesville last night. Bob Kessler and Frank Baird shared scoring honors for the Kautskys with 20 points each.

got two or three routine shots and Goldberg was ordered back to work. . . . “I suppose Jock didn’t want the "other players to get jealous,” commented Mr. Greene. “They tell me such things do happen in college football.”

Bendix Five Wins InA. A. U. League

SOUTH BEND, Dec. 16 (U. P.).— Bendix Brakes held its tie with the Studebaker five for leadership in the

| Indiana A. A. U. Basketball League today by virtue of a 44-t0-36 victory over the Nappanee Linco Oilers here last night. John Barko, former Iowa University star, helped the Brakes continue their undefeated record by scoring 10 field goals and two charity shots to take scoring honors. Meanwhile, George Chacharis, president of the league, announced from Gary that the Sheet Mills and Gary Works were forced to withdraw from the league due to inability to secure proper gymnasium facilities. He said Keiser Inn of Crown Point and the Club Sar five of Gary will take their place. Both teams will play their games at Crown Point.
