‘Brother Rat’ Is Not About

Gangsters

Reveals Life in Military School, Press Agent Emphasizes.

The biggest job the press agent for “Brother Rat” has is informing people throughout the country as follows: “No, ‘Brother Rat’ is not a gangster play!” Much time and space have heen devoted to the title's explanation.

Yét misconceptions still exist. Proof that some have heard and some

haven’t is found in the following

anecdote, which the press agent says is true: _ Recently a truly wicked New York gunman was given a salutation with full stress on “rat” as it used to be used. Whereupon the bad man ‘grinned and replied: “T’anks, partner. But how did you know I'd gone straight?” It’s Friendly Greeting If you, like the gangster’s friend, are unaware of 1937 connotation of “rat,” it’s something you call your best friend as well as your severest critic. The term “Brother Rat,” Authors John Monks Jr. and Fred E. Finklehoffe tell us, is a combination of “White Rat” and “Brother EIk,” retaining the best features .of both. According to them, it is something of a term of endearment at Virignia Military Institute. The authors are V. M. I. graduates, and their fellow alumni are uniformly enthusiastic about the play. They do believe, though, that the play makes, the se¢hool seem a more sprightly place than i really is. Reveals School Life

“Brother Rat” emphasizes the lighter side of military school life, though it does have its share of extracurricular tragedies. But the light touch is what the alumni are chéering. They think it’s the logical means of dispelling the prevalent notion that their alma mater, and similar institutions, are drab strongholds of militarism, with emphasis on fascism and bed slats. The engagement at English’s, opening tonight, is being presented .by George Abbott, and most of the original Broadway cast is to be present. Included among them are Clare Hazel, who got her dramatic start as the “Honey Chile” of radio fame; Jean McCoy, Reese Alsop, James Gillis, Eddie Bracken, Gary Merrill, Mary Ella Perry, Anna Franklin, Mary Rolfe, Richard Jones, Lyle Bettger, Robert Scott, Burke O'Connell, Hollis Mitchell, Walter Fenner, Frederick de Wilde, John Foster and Juan Root.
