ford By PAUL B. WILLIAMSON : HE South produced the nation’s most powerful group of college teams in the 1937 football season, according to my final ratings showing classifications according to conference and geographical groups. Wa : : Close behind were the top flight teams of the East, head--

ed by Pittsburgh which ranks as the country’s strongest
team for the year. .. .. Notre Dame, after a bad start, wound up as the leader
in the Middle West, followed by Nebraska, Minnesota and | |
Indiana in that order. In the Big Ten Indiana, although up‘set by Purdue, finished; with the second highest season, rating behind ‘Minnesota and just ahead of Ohio State. : ; ~~ Butler's Bulldogs led the Indiana Conference group No. 1, followed by DePauw, Wabash, State and Earlham. Franklin topped group No. 2, with Hanover runner up. 5 ie] * The record of my forecasts this season on 2715 games predicted and reported was 241 upsets, 102 upsetting ties, 235 upsets predicted ‘as possible and 113 ties called as probable. That gives an over-all efficiency of 88.2 percent, and 90 per t disregarding ties. The system predicted as probable 52.1 per cent, or more than one-half, of all the season’s 225 ties dn games predicted on. The table is based on all games reported by Dec. 6.° Following are the more important group classifications: ; Alana i008 Hh Worssster .11L) IN. The pressure was on. He had one putt to win; two to tie. He banged the 20-footer squarely into the back of the cup. Thomson had the title within his grasp with only two holes to play. An off-line approach to the 17th put him in the canal. Despite this lapse he was still in the race. Two good woods put him just short of the green on the long 18th. His niblick left him with a four-foot putt for an incoming 35, an aggregate of 282, tying Revolta. ‘But Jimmy blew the putt. It was
