Nothing’s as challenging as trying to do what everyone says can’t be done. With a vicarious sense of pleasure, Hoosiers will revel in. the accomplishment: of Alec Blanton, a former Indianapolis "boy, who, despite ‘ali obstacles, was responsible for bringing out the new popular edition of John James Audubon’s “The Birds of America” Mr. Blanton’s idea for one of the biggest publishing ventures in years was at first received coldly. Nc one before had thought of printing 50,000 copies-of the work of the greatest American naturalist and painter of bird pictures. It was 99 years since the original huge folio had been engraved and printed in England in an edition limited to less than 200 sets. The price of one of these sets at that time was $1000. Today a set of the first edition, when if can be found, has brought as much'as $15,000. The San’ Francisco owner of a complete set containing 500 original bird plates lent it to the publishers with the stipulation that they insure it for $50,000 during the time it was in their possession. The William Henry Smith Memorial Library of the Indiana Historica. Society has the only compete first edition in Indiana. $
