Books; Women Smile at Clare Boothe’s Satire, While Men Talk of Sequel.

By VIRGINIA MOORHEAD MANNON : A perfectly stunning drawing room designed by Mrs. ‘Harold B. Tharp is the single setting for “Rain From 'Heaven,” the play which opens tonight in the Civic Theater. Some of the town’s favorite actors as well as a few

neophytes to appear in the production. Michael Mielnick has really done a fancy job of paneling on, the “flats” which compose the walls of the room. Theyre canvas stretched on frames, first given a paint base and then gone over with a dry brush to make a pine grain. Every single knot hole is a hand painted swirl :

60 copies of “To the Mountain,” lent. by a local publisher.

It’s to be

hoped the monotony of the titles doesn’t give the actors the jitters. Alfred Etcheverry, Civic director, remembers one play that called for 32 feet of hooks. That time they were all different. :

Women Voters. Seek to Defeat McKellar Bill

§

Senators VanNuys and Minton (D. Ind.) were urged to oppose the McKellar Postmasters Bill in a statement issued by the Indiana League of Women Voters at its session yesterday. The bill was reported favorably from the Senate Committee on Postoffices and Post Roads by a vote of 9 to 4 and is now awaiting action in the Senate. The statement reads as follows: “The Indiana League of Women Voters is unalterably opposed to fhe McKellar Postmasters Bill. Its enactment would abrogate the executive order by which all first, second ad third ‘class postmasters are now selected under the civil service system. It would return

these postmasters to the political

and appointive system. We believe that it would constitute a perpetuation of the spoils system at the expense of the postal service and in bold 'defiance of overwhelming public opinion in favor of civil service reform. It would also directly repudiate platform planks of both major political parties. ~ “The League believes the issue is ¢lear cut—patronage vs. antipatronage—and reminds you that in the Gallup poll 85 per cent of the voters polled in Indiana expressed themselves as strong adherents of civil service reform.” ”
