Kokomo Five Listed Among Pace Setters
Marion, Rochester, Anderson And Jeffersonville Seen As Chief Rivals.
* By United Press Five Indiana high school basket- | ball teams stood out today as con- | tenders for the state championship | after several conference games with | tough rivals had tested their
| caliber. These are Kokomo, Marion, | Rochester, Anderson and Jefferson- | ville | Coach Alfred (Peedad) Campbell | has a tough combination at Koko- | mo. Chester Gabriel, 6-foot-7-inch | sophomore center, works between | forwards Holler and Hewitt, who | six-three and six-two respectively. Three guards are six-footers. That | such height will handicap their | speed has been disproved hy the | futile attempt of Jefferson of La- | fayette to fast-break them into sub- | mission. Three others, including | Tech of Indianapolis, have fallen | to Kokomo. { A “natural” will be played Friday when Marion sends an alternating | seven-man team against Kokomo to | decide leadership of the North | Central Conference. At present they | are tied with two wins apiece. | Orville Hooker's Giants first boosted | Marion basketball fever by smashing the state champion Anderson Indians. Last Friday Logansport | could score only 15 points against them, satisfying Hooker that R | rotation of fresh players would give | his crew one of the state's strongest | defenses. Zebras Display Power
The Hoosier A.
The Rochester Zebras, one of last season’s four state finalists and winner of the Central Indiana Confer- | ence, turned on offensive, powe er last Friday against Elwood, winning 40 to 25. Although Elwood this year is | no supreme test, the Zebras gave | them the same treatment adminis=tered to Huntington, 42 to 22. Archie Chadd’s Indians of Ander- | son, probably from force of habit, | | again give early the state finals this week, however, his machine into battles in four days. The Braves meet Muncie Wednesday, the Lafayette Bronkos Friday and Jeffersonville Saturday Any of these—especially the Red | Devils—are capable of breaking the Indiana Arrows. Anderson has not | vet showed last season's state cham- | pionship caliber, barely taking Martinsville and Newcastle last wee and dropping their Conference opener to Marion. But the canny Chadc knows that bitter early season plav | undermines energies for tournament drives.

Four for Red Devils
Down in Jeffersonville people already are wondering “just how far” | it is to the Butler Field House, cen- | ter of final tournament play. Their | Red Devils have knocked off four | consecutive challengers this season. They use a well-developed offense centered around Bob Raisor, lengthy NSarnck | pivot man.
