High Talent |

Of Heifetz Is Enriched

Violinist, After oh Of Decade, Shows Full Mastery.

By JAMES THRASHER

The illustrious violinist, Jascha Heifetz, terminated a decade's absence from Indianapolis with a full, new revelation of his art at English’s yesterday afternoon. Before an audience of capacity proportions and boundless enthusiasm, he demonstrated that the ensuing years have served to cap the pinnacle of his distinguished talent. Musicians who hold a complete mastery over their instruments are rare enough. But those who have made this mastery subservient to music's higher calling occupy an even more | select place upon Parnassus. Mr. Heifetz is one of them. It seems scarcely possible that the amazing child violinist, Jascha Heifetz, could have escaped the pitfalls that await so many prodigies and have gone on to become oge of the great violinists of all time. Yet the miracle has happened. His art | has grown, deepened and become | more warmly human with maturity, and it doubtless will continue to do SO.

Beethoven Sonata Best

The peak achievement of yester- | day's recital was the playing of Bee- | thoven’s Sonata in E Flat. The | performance of Mr. Heifetz and | Emanuel Bay. his collaborator at | the piano, defies description and | beggars praise. This sonata and its companions | are not Beethoven at his great- | est, but they reveal the composer at a height of pure melodic in- | spiration. In Mr. Heifetz’ hands, | the music became a soul-satisfying | experience. No other violinist to- | day, I am sure, is so poised, 50 | fully informed as to the composer's | intention and so unhampered in making this intention known. | Throughout an afternoon of music of various styles and excellence, the artist's playing maintained this same high standard. Dinicu Number Repeated To begin the recital, there was Mr. Heifetz’ transcription of an Allegro from one of the Mozart Diver- | timenti Then, after the sonata, came the Wieniawski Concerte in D Minor—with the popular “Ro-| mance,” which was rapturously applauded. The concluding group contained | three more Heifetz transcriptions: A condensation of Debussy’s! “L'apres-midi d'un faune”; Godow- | sky's nostalgic “Alt Wien,” and Dinicu’s “Hora Staccato.” A Schu-| bert Rondo, arranged by Friedberg, | stood second in the group, and the | program ended with Ravel's prodigiously difficult “Tzigane,” played | with an olympian disregard for all its sn ares and barbs. The “Hora Staccato” had to be repeated. And, in this connection, | one might be permitted to depart | from the tradition of critical good | form and comment particularly | upon Mr. Heifetz' staccato bowing. It must be the envy and despair of every fiddler in the world. Thanks are due Mrs. Nancy Martens for bringing Mr. Heifetz as a part of her season's concert series. And to the thanks a petition might | be added for his early return. {
