CIRCUIT JUDGE READY TO DISBAR HOWARD BATES
Local Attorney to Receive Embezzlement Sentence On Saturday.
Howard H. Bates, facing a Federal | Court sentence for embezzlement of $650 from the estate of a ward, is to be disbarred from the practice of law, Circuit Court Judge Earl R. Cox said today. Judge Cox said he would sign the
disharment order following a hear-|
ing on charges brought against Bates | by the Indianapolis Bar Association’s |
grievance committee. The judge said | he would sign the order effective Nov. 29. Supplementary charges, brought | following Bates’ conviction on em- | bezzlement charges in Federal Court two weeks ago, were made part of the record against the lawyer. Made General Denial Bates’ defense was a general denial of the accusations. He consented to making the disbarment effective immediately. Failure of Bates to defend him- | self against the charges of moral turpitude contained in the Bar Association’s complaint grew out of the suggestion of Federal Judge Robert C. Baltzell, who is to sentence the former lawyer Saturday. In deferring action until this week, Judge Baltzell asserted Bates never should be permitted to practice law again “in Indiana or elsewhere.” He said he “would conan entry showing Bates had | been disbarred in considering the | sentence to be imposed.” He criticized the Bar Association for failure to prosecute disbarment proceedings in 1935, when similar | charges were made against Bates. Bates was convicted of misappro- | priating proceeds of & Goverment | pension to the daughter of a Civil | War veteran. He repaid the estate | the shortage following an investiga- | tion hy the War Veterans Administration.

INDICTMENT BROUGHT | IN MUNCIE SLAYING
MUNCIE, Nov. 30 (U. P)—! Vaughn Yates, 26-year-old Ten- | nesseean, was under indictment for | first and second degree murder to- | day for the “honor slaying” of Ezra | Cole, 30, Bone Cave, Tenn. Yates told officers, they said, that he killed Cole because he ran off with his 29-year-old sister, Virginia, and was living with her although they were unmarried. The sister, held as a material witness, maintained she was Coesh wife, according to officers.

he said. “The approximately $250,- | 000 which we normally would spend | during December will be spent just [the same. It's all because of the new tax law. “Inasmuch as the 1937 Legislature passed a law prohibiting any transfer of funds beginning next year, we must make sure all our bills are paid by midnight of Dec. 31. At | that time, all money left in the de- | partmental budgets reverts to the City general fund. “Therefore, all our December purchases must be paid in the same month and not a month later, as normally. We will be able to do | this, because we know the general
needs of the City and what they | will cost, such as coal, milk, ete. and if any emergency purchases {have to be made, we will ask for [in invoice immediately.”

49,000 STATE FARMS USING ELECTRICITY
Indiana Is Rated Sixth Rural Power Service.
Fred Bays, Indiana Public Service Commission member, today estimated that approximately 49,000 farms in this State now have electric service. The Edison Electric Institute informed Mr. Bays recently that on Aug. 23 there were 48,345 Indiana farms having electric connections. Since that time approximately 700 farms have been electrified, he said. Indiana now ranks sixth in rural electrification, Mr. Bays said.
