STOCK LIST GAINS ONE TO FIVE POINTS IN ACTIVE TRADING

Tickers Fall Several Minutes Behind Market.

NEW YORK, Nov. 27 (U. P.).—The stock market advanced 1 to more than 5 points in active trading today and carried the main list above the levels of a week ago. The recovery attained such momentum that for a time in the last hour tickers were several minutes behind the market. Incentive for short covering and new buying was the outlook for further aids to business in Washington next week when the President presents his plans for a giant housing program to Congress. Meantime, business was loosening its purse string. New York department stores stepped up purchases. Several railroads entered the equipment market. Rail mills in the South were being stepped up on heavy orders. Inventory positions among mercantile establishments were reported becoming depleted to the extent where large purchases would be imperative before the end of the year, according to reports

extent of Government interference with industry has been grossly exaggerated. It is all right for those who hate Roosevelt and for politicians who wish to discredit him and for certain business leaders to want to destroy him to blame the depression on him. But that is not only unfair, but is, what is much more important, the merest distraction.

It is all right for Roosevelt to have claimed that everything that is good was planned by him and that he has brought a new order into the world. That also is just so much preposterous nonsense. But the ordinary businessman who has a business to operate and the ordinary man who has a job to protect—he is not interested in the battle of hates and vanities between these various people. This is a plain hard-headed business proposition with him. And he knows that business is in the hands of businessmen and that they cannot escape their own responsibility by sitting around weeping and crying for the Government to do something. It is also stupid of the Government to keep on calling on businessmen to expand, to invest, to build. It is just so much waste wordage to

NEW YORK, Nov. 27.—Everybody. is asking what the Government will do or can do to revive lagging industry. A much more important question is—what can business to about it? After all, business is operated by businessmen and not by the Government. The Government may have dipped in here and there.

But the

sure or gesture. They build them to make money out of them. There are two things the matter with business. One is the failure of investment and the consequent contraction of purchasing power. The other is the contraction of purchasing power through high prices. The first one is not so easy to deal with. Perhaps the second one is also difficult. But businessmen can do something about that. Business groups have simply got to understand that if they persist in their price schedules they will not only not get those prices, but they will find themselves in profound trouble after Christmas. If business would not set in motion a widespread, well-backed and publicized job among the producers and retailers of the country to put prices down they could do something to stem the tide which now sets in against them. In late 1931 I toured the counWon visiting merchants. In every town amid the general depression I found at least one merchant in every line doing a good business. He was invariably the merchant who saw the handwriting on the wall quickly and chose to dispose of his stock at low prices. He helped HE but he also helped the Souiizyy Jor

WHEAT FUTURES DROP FRACTIONS IN ACTIVE TRADE

Weakness in Foreign Marts Eases Grain Prices in Chicago.

CHICAGO, Nov. 27 (U. P.).— Wheat futures on the Chicago Board of Trade today shifted up and down within a restricted range on both sides of the previous close. At the close wheat was 14 to 3% cent lower, December, 90 3 cents; corn was 's to 4 cent lower, December, 533% cents and oats were % to 14 cent higher, December, 303% cents. The opening was mixed with May showing conspicuous strength but the bearish import of the fact that Liverpool did not profit fully by the rally here yesterday was responsible for further declines. Weakness at Buenos Aires contributed to the downswing. Extreme strength in securities and commodities brought out a trade of considerable volume, Small selling was absorbed for the most part and prices showed some ability to rally. According to reports there was very little export business in North American wheat done overnight, comprising about 300,000 bushels, mainly Manitobas. Corn at the opening was steady to a fraction higher with commission houses buying May in fair amounts, Quotations held closely to previous closing levels throughout |2 the session.
