Advises Credit
To Europe for Old U. S. Debts ©
WASHINGTON, Nov. 25 (U.P) .— Senator Lewis (D. Ill) today pro- | posed that European nations owing debts to the United States subtract from them the American obligations [owed foreign citizens since Civil War days and
Lewis’ proposal was made after he
| discussed with the State Depart-
ment the results of his recent investigations of the European debt situation. “I make bold now to offer that each country figure up the principal amount of the debt.” he said, “and subtract the amount of this debt from the whole amount now due by each to the United States | on the war debts. { Mark the debt due them as paid, and then pay the balance that is! then admittedly due to America to |
| the Treasury of the United States.
“I take the liberty to suggest that | this be done at once, preceding any arrangement of trade treaty or the! negotiation of any further loan of money by our Government, or by bankers or financiers in our Gov- | ernments, without consent. “After this result the adjustments to the smaller countries on the | smaller debts can be made, on the
| basis created in the payments or
adjustments with the larger
greater debtors.’
