COUNTY HEADS FAVOR BUYING LAND FOR HOME
Commissioners Are to Ask Authority to Float Bond Issue.
Petitions to authorize an $8000 bond issue to purchase a new Juvenile Court and Detention Home site will be circulated by County Commissioners about Jan. 10, it was learned today. Commissioner Dow W. Vorhies, also announced that Marion County Council members indicated they would approve the proposed bond issue. The property, located on N. East St., would be adequate for a building to house both the Court and home, Mr. Vorhies said. He added, however, that it would | be impossible to issue bonds to obtain money for the new building until suitable legislation is passed by the State Legislature.
Land Purchase Favored “I believe that despite the fact a new home cannot be built for at least a year and a half, it is wise to purchase the land,” Mr. Vorhies said. “The law is specific in permitting a bond issue for purchase of land. However, a bill to allow a bond issue to pay for a new Detention Home was defeated by the 1937 General Assembly.” The 80-year-old former Governor’s mansion at 538 W. New York St. for use as temporary Juvenile Home, was leased by Commissioners two weeks ago. Children are to be transferred from the condemned E. | Michigan St. home, branded a “fire | trap” by State Fire Marshall Clem Smith, after the first of the year.
