Golden Bears Should Have Done Better Against Stanford, | Expert Says: System Enjoys Best Week « In Matter of Forecasts.
By PAUL B. WILLIAMSON LD MAN WINTER blew in his unpredictable influence to aid in upsets among major football squads and two or three startling reversals among minors. But, up where the cold winds howled down off the Appalachians, powerful Pitt ran true to form to beat a shifty Penn State eleven, 28 to 7, and rise above California in the duel for first place in the nation. California dropped to second place for making only two touchdowns in its major game with Stanford, while Pitt was making four touchdowns. True, Stanford probably is a stronger team than Penn State, but it is doubtful if Stanford had pointed any stronger for its engagement than
The Williamson system emerged from the week-end of tighter playing and unpredictable weather for its best full week of predictions with an over-all efficiency of 92.1 per |
cent and an efficiency of 93.1 per cent discounting ties. Cecil
Undefeated and untied Alabama, though idle over the week-end, advanced a step to third place because Fordham, previously in third place, was having a hard time beating a lower-rated St. Mary's, 6 to 0.
NOTE: This week we present a table of ratings covering only those major teams | with the best and most consistent 1937 records to date, and a number of other | teams with excellent records but which have traveled in lighter company. The week after Thanksgiving the rating table will cover more than 630 football teams, ranked in order. The week after that the teams will be ranked in their respective |
conferences and groups in more than 70 circuits. ’ (GAMES REPORTED THROUGH NOV.

is as tough as he looks, as Notre Dame goes and comes. Midwest Stars Versatile Schoenbaum is speedy and positively devastating on defense—made more tackles behind the line than any other Ohio Stater. He also is an accurate placekicker, The 195-pound Fred Schroeder probably is Michigan State's most accomplished all-around lineman. He is a warded a guard post, although he takes care of a tackle equally well. Wolf, Ohio State's co-captain, quickly diagnoses the oppositions plays, does a splendid job of backing up the line, is a sound player on student. The latter doesn’t hurt. I'm not going into the second and third Midwest teams and try to explain why warriors like Andy Puplis, Joe Ruetz, Kuharich, and Sweeney of Notre Dame; Twedell, Midler, and Buhler of Minnesota, Nelson and Pingel of Michigan State; and Don Heap and Kovatch of Northwestern are listed there. You should be able to answer that one vourself. There simply are not enous places to go around.

coming in on a scholarship from the college, is forced to sign an agreement with the baseball coach. This agreement makes the coach his manager. Don't think for a second this is pure fantasy. It's only too true. The unappetizing thing about the | college baseball setup is not that the young men are being lured away before the end of their terms but tha their abilities are being capitalized by the coaches. If Mr. Rickey wants to do the right thing for college baseball he will turn his at- | tention to this condition. His present suggestion doesn’t figure to help it; indeed, it threatens to make it much worse by strengthening the monopoly of the dollar grabbing coaches.
