Coronets and Ermine Add Splendor at Night Concert of Orchestra
Intent Faces Relax During ‘Till Eulenspiegel’s Pranks’: Artists’ Club Ball Pokes Fun at Herron Art Institute’s Horse.
By VIRGINIA MOORHEAD MANNON
Fabien Sevitzky, whose flight here amid lightning and thunder one hot day last summer resulted in his beoming Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra conductor, took town storm with Saturday's first-night concert. His every gesture of direction expressed the mood of olorious music. The regally gowned feminine part of the audience was in perfect harmony with the program. Yards of ermine went into evening wraps. Coronets, gold and pear] headdresses and veils studded with brilliants added touches of splendor to the women’s costumes. The satin lapels of the men’s evening clothes gleamed in the light reflected from the orchestra shell. The gentlemen, on the whole, took their music seriously. During the “Burvanthe” overture and the Dubensky Fugue, first numbers on the program, a candid camera would have captured their intent expressions. Here and there a chin was cupped in a hand and a brow slightly furrowed. The women, with their coats gracefully draped behind their shoulders, occasionally closed their eyes while listening. One buried her face in the flowers she held. Ferdinand Schaefer, orchestra founder and conductor emeritus, sat erect in box. his snowy beard gleaming. After the opening strains of 11 Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks,” faces relaxed as listeners were arried alo with the gay notes of the tone poem.

While music dominated the early part of Saturday evening, art held its festivities on into the night at the annual Indiana Artists’ Club ball in the Travertine Room of the Hotel Linpoln. Gaily colored balloons, confetti, comic hats and noisemakers along with the surrealistic decorations, which keynoted the theme of the affair, all added up to make a lively party. Wilbur Peat, John Herron Art Institute director: Donald Mattison, art school director, and the famous horse which stands on a pedestal in front of the Art Institute were the subjects of one of the dozen surrealistic panels with which art school students decorated the walls. After a grand march which included a street lamp, a bird cage, a camera, a dining table with a flower centerpiece and a long green caterpillar with 12 pairs of legs, prizes were awarded for outstanding costumes. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Head's surrealistic costumes won the prize for the most beautiful. Miss Bonnie Blakie with a face painted on her back was awarded the prize for the most unique. Miss Beth Woodruff, garbed as a Russian girl, was judged most authentically costumed and Miss Mary Lou Webb, as a child bride, most risque. To Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Hurst went the prize for the most comic outfit. Mr. Hurst represented Charlie McCarthy and Edgar Bergen. Prizes were pictures donated by Elmer E. Taflinger, Wanda Gay, william Kaeser, John Zwara and Randolph L. Coats. Henrik Mayer won the first prize for the Indiana Artists’ Club exhibit recently held at L. S. Ayres & Co. Miss Helen Griggs received second prize and Theodore Van Voorhees, thrid. Other prize winners were Miss Dorothy Spiegel, Will Hunt and Floyd Hopper.
