AIR CRASH KILLS EX-LOCAL MAN
Faulty Motor Blamed for Mishap Fatal to Capt. George Matthews.
(U. P.).—A faulty motor today was believed the cause of the plane crash in which Lieut. George Knoeller, 37, and Capt. Joseph Matthews, 40, Army Air Corps reserve pilots, were killed late yesterday. Capt. Matthews formerly was an Indianapolis resident. The officers, Knoeller at the controls, were returning to their Louisville homes from a meeting of the Fifth Corps Air Reserve when the plane crashed into a snow-covered field three miles east of here. Witnesses said the motor apparently failed.
Capt. Joseph E. Matthews, killed in an airplane crash in Kentucky vesterday, Indianapolis resident eight years, lived at 3627 N. Capitol Ave. until October. He was a salesman for the General Electric Co. and recently was transferred to the Louisville offices of the firm. He was an active member of the U. S. Army Air Corps Reserve in the Fifth Corps Area and was president of the Fifth Corps Area Reserve Association. Capt. Fred W. Sommer, 3211 Brookside Parkway, South Drive, secretary-treasurer of the Reserve Association, said he had planned to meet Capt. Matthews in Columbus, O., and fly with him to Louisville. Weather conditions forced him to turn back at Richmond and he did not attend the meeting. Friends said Capt. Matthews attended the University of Kentucky and had been employed by the General Electric Co. about 12 years. He was a native of Kentucky.
