GAME TO DECIDE CITY PREP TITLE:
«®
Blue Devils
To Clash With
Broad Ripple
Rockets Have Chance to Capture Crown; Defeat Means 3-Way Tie.
The 1937 city high school football championship will be decided
tomorrow afternoon, when Shortridge and Broad Ripple clash at Butler Bowl in the final game of the season for both teams. Out of the muddle into which the | title race was thrown by Tech's unexpected victory over Shortridge last week, one thing was fairly certain today—Broad Ripple is to be counted in on title considerations. The amazing Rockets, who already have defeated Manual, 14-6, can gain undisputed claim to the championship by a victory tomorrow. On the other hand, if the Blue Devils win, ‘he title will be a three-way tie between Tech, Shortridge and Washington. In the seven-game history of the football rivalry between the Rockets and the Blue Devils, Shortridge has won every game. Following a 21-12 victory in 1924, the series lapsed until 1930, when Shortridge | won, 58-6. The Blue Devils tri-| umphed in 1932, 6-0; 1933. 13-0; 1934, 18-0; 1935, 19-6, and 1936, |
Rockets this season have marked up the best record ever compiled by a Broad Ripple team, with six victories against one setback. They have defeated Plainfield, Seymour, Rushville, Manual, Warren Central and the Silent Hoosiers, losing only to Sheridan, 14-13. Before its initial defeat of the scason at the hands of Tech, Shortridge scored victories over Southport, Stivers of Dayton, O., Noblesville, Jefferson of Lafayette, Washington, Cathedral and Crawfordsville. Thirteen members of the Broad Ripple squad will close their grid careers in tomorrow's game, including Clifford Burger, Wally Scott, | Sam Ritter, Jay Boyer, Robert John- | son, Ed Todd, William Butler, Richard McCord, Richard Wilkinson, | William Wendling, Howard Whalin, | Ernest Schenk and William Bowling. | Charles VanMeter, another senior, | was lost for the season several weeks ago when he received a fractured | leg. | Seventeen Blue Devils are seniors. They are Capt. George Pike, Dick | Fisher, Barnes Calwell, H. L. Freyn, | Bob Miller, Bud Pack, Emory Schlake, Jim Crockett, Wiis:
Lingeman, Fred Rash, Jim Gilson Bob Gebhardt, Bud Piel, Harvey | Hunter, Bill Irwin, Winston Smillie and Bob Witham.
The Park School football team | today had earned the distinction of | being Marion County's only undefeated and untied prep eleven for| 1937, following a smashing 26-0] victory over the Silent Hoosiers in| vesterday’'s session finale at Park| field. Coach Lou Reichel's squad, which | has lost but one game in two years, had previously defeated the Frankfort “B” team, Morton Memorial | of Knightstown, West Lafayette and | Kentucky Military Institute. Park scored in every period aginst | the Silent Hoosiers yesterday. Rob- | ert Cusack tallied twice, and Bernie | Broderick and Harry Hanna added a touchdown apiece. The winners] cashed in on two of the four extra | point attempts, Jim Boswell taking | a pass from Broderick for one and | then passing to the same player for | the second counter.

He: sa Big Help to the Irish
Joe Ruetz piles in.
Native Son of South Bend Is Notre Dame Stalwart
SOUTH BEND, Nov. 18.—Not the least reason for Notre Dame's comeback this fall is that Joseph Hubert Ruetz, back at his old guard position, was given the “Go” sign, and in turn passed it on to the Irish backfield, for which he clears the way, Joe expects to be in there fighting when the Irish tackle Northwestern Saturday at Evanston, Ill. Notre Dame was short of quarterbacks last year. Elmer Layden had good guards in Capt. Johnny Lautor and Joe Kuharich, so he called
tween Stanley and the little town of Shoup. It was on this trip that Ruetz ob|taned his secona real taste of | mountain climbing. The first oc- | curred in the summer of 1935, when | he essayed a hike alone through the | Great Smoky mountains of Tennessee. Ruetz already is making plans for another trip next summer, but has | not yet decided where he will go. It takes nearly a year to prepare for one of these expeditions, Joe said. In high schoo! Ruetz played with | such stalwarts as Erwin Wegner and John Kovatch, now of Northwestern, and opposed his present running mate at guard, Kuharich, then of Riley High, South Bend. His most satisfactory performance, he feels, wa. in a conference high school game when he repeatedly tock out an all-state end and cleared the way for his teammates’ drive to victory. He doesn't admit this, but one might justly infer that his greatest thrill in college football came on that November afternoon in Columbus, when he covered himself with glory and Ohio State with confusion by ripping to shreds the vaunted forward wall of the Scarlet Scourge to help the Irish to a gridiron victory the equal of which seldom has been witnessed. It wasn't surprising that Joe Ruetz, given the green light at guard again, did so much toward returning the sparkle to Irish eyes.

ing position with the shock troops. Ruetz, now a senior, never considered that as a sophomore he was an All-America prospect at guard. | He sacrificed this chance te help | the Layden Laddies as second-string | quarterback. Ruetz, a South Bend boy who didn't have to leave his native town to succeed, did well enough at quarter. ‘He had a clear head and | could block. But he itched to mix | it up. He's Happier Now
That is why he is happier now | that he is back with Kuharich, an- | | other local boy who made good at | home. flanking the Notre Dame center, Pat McCarty. Opponents are experiencing plenty of trouble penetrating this sector of the Irish forward wall—so much so, in fact, that Ruetz and Kuharich now are dubbed the “antitouchdown twins.” In addition to playing guard all over the place, Ruetz, who is of | German-Irish parentage, is a scientist, mountain climber, and an hon- | or student. | Ruetz led the charge of the Notre | | Dame forward wall in the never-to-be-forgotten final quarter against Ohio State in 1935. It was Ruetz whe dropped back to guard Bill Shakespeare as 'the bard of Staten Island winged the vital last-ditch pass to a waiting end, Wayne Millner. Ruetz is a science student with an honor average. Joe's ambition is to specialize in anthropology. He'd like nothing better than to join a scien-
science. In 1936, he and Louis Miller, a seminarian, undertook a 175mile journey on foot through one of the wildest, most inaccessible areas in the United States, the Salmon
Lured by Weird Tales
Attracted by fantastic tales of the River of No Return, made famous by an expedition down the Salmon
