Humorous
Lecture by Dr. Shapley
- Otto Frenzel Jr. Heads Cornell Club Committee To Bring University’s Musical Groups Here - For December Performance.
By VIRGINIA MOORHEAD MANNON
There was nothing in Dr.
Harlow Shapley’s address
on “Exploring Galaxies From a South African Kopje,” ~~ before the Contemporary Club’s guest meeting last night in Caleb Mills Hall, to indicate whether he had any yearn- : ings when a boy in Missouri to measure the heavens. Dr. Shapley’s audience, largely illiterati of heavenly affairs, sus- . pected from the title of his talk that it was going to be something
about the stars. Some of his listeners knew he had a reputation for . establishing measurements of the solar system and for research in
photometry and spectroscopy.
Still other astronomical amateurs knew him as the recipient of scientific medals from several European countries as well as the United States and the holder of more honorary degrees than the
. heaven has stars.
Everybody was agog to see what manner of man
- ne of the world's foremost scientists and the head of Harvard University’s department of astronomy was. They found a delightfully humorous genius who, after dividing the sidereal bodies into seven zones for measurement, tossed aside
« a few hundred million light years as
casually as a gum wrapper. In
bh: a nice way he let his hearers realize their relative unimportance by
= flashing a few galaxies upon a silv
er screen. He is, by the way,
looking for ‘some more galaxies for his catalogs. The sun was disposed of quickly as a very average heating plant, the stars as a mere hot mixture of gases, the earth as planet No. 3 and orly the moon remained to present a problem. Dr. Shapley would like to come to some sort of terms with the moon because it makes too much light in the sky for his pictures. Warmed up by Dr. William Niles Wishard’s brilliant introduc
* tion, Contemporary Club members
and their guests were in fine
fettle for inoculation with Dr. Shapley’s celestial serum. Scattered throughout the auditorium were astronomy professors
and teachers from all over the State. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence F. Merrell’s
dined together before the lecture.
A number of club members
dinner guests were Mr. and Mrs. James T. Cunningham, Mr. and ‘Mrs. Ralph Showalter, Dr. and Mrs. Albert Seaton, Mrs. Joseph Littell and Fred McNeice, London, England. Mr. and Mrs. Herman W. Kothe and Mrs. Julia Jean Rudd also
brought their dinner guests to hear Dr. Shapley.
In Mrs. Rudd's
party was Mrs. Oscar Baur, Terre Haute, formerly of Indianapolis, who is spending a few days at the Propylaeum.

- The idea of the Contemporary Club originated with Mrs. May
;- Wright Sewall nearly 50 years ago.
In 1890 she served as the club’s
+ first president. Mrs, Sewall’s reputation as a hostess who brought
notables from all over the world to
her home was well known. It
was her desire to enlarge the opportunities of people in the city to meet and hear the persons of distinction whom she had been
bringing here from time to time. The organization's objective is
to “consider and discuss phil-
osophical, social, political, economical, esthetic, scientific, literary ~ or other questions.” To that end an imposing array of speakers has
appeared - before it.
In 1907, while he was Princeton University
‘president, Woodrow Wilson addressed the club on “The Ideals of Public Life.” Among other outstanding speakers of the past have been David Starr Jordan, William Dean Howells, Dr. Edward Everett Hale, Brand Whitlock, Amy Lowell, Carl Sandburg and Gertrude
