BUICK DISPLAYS FOUR NEW CARS

21 Body Models Announced; Dickens Points to Many Improvements.

Four new lines of Buick motor cars for 1938, the Series 40 Special, Series 60 Century, Series 80 Roadmaster and Series 90 Limited are being shown at the Indianapolis Automobile Show this year, carrying outstanding engineering and style improvements. C. A. Dickens, manager of the recently estab- : lished Indianapolis zone office for the Buick Motor Co., declares that more new features are packed into the 1938 models than in any new cars introduced by Buick in the last five years. Outstanding among these are . the new “Dyna- Mr. Dickens flash” engine, that permits higher compression without detonation and consequently greater power and performance; coil spring rear suspension, an innovation resulting in marked improvement in riding and steering qualities as well as safety; new “silent zone” body mounting, which further eliminates road vibration from the car bodies, and a new self-shifting transmission, which will be optional at extra cost on the lower priced Series 40 cars. The Buick engineering changes are regarded as among the most important in the industry this year. Both the engine improvements and the new coil spring rear suspension are exclusive features for 1938. Ranging from the lower medium price field through the medium and upper medium brackets, Buick’s heaviest volume is in the field covered by the Series 40 Special grouv of cars. According to Mr. Dickens

this series accounts for better than 70 per cent of total Buick production. The new Buicks are popularly styled in the new streamline trend and are offered in a total of 21 body models which include sedans both with and without built-in trunks. standard and sport coupe models with opera seats, and convertible coupes and phaetons. Both two and four-door sedans are built in the Series 40 and Series 60 Buicks, while the longer wheelbase 80's and 90's are all four-door types. Entirely new Fisher unisteel turret top bodies have been designed for the Series 80 and 90 Buicks. Complete new styling both inside and out mark the new Buicks as another standout in the 1938 style parade. The attractive radiator grilles are of new design and are die cast in two sections with the color line of the hood carried down through the center surmounted by the Buick crest. Hood lids this year lift from the molding line for more convenient light service, with fixed hood side panels lending greater strength and solidity to the front end sheet metal assembly. Attractive louvres are

Rearwards, the new Buicks are completely restyled, with an unusual arrangement of tail lights, license illumination and stop light used on all sedan models. Eliminated this year, is the gas tank filler cap, which has been placed under the left rear fender, completely smoothing up the rear end. Access to the gas tank spout is through a small door in the fender. A new Buick 8 emblem is mounted in the center of the luggage compartment door on sedan models. Bumpers also carry the Buick emblem, front and rear. The 1936 cars are powered by valve-in-head straight eight engines involving the new “Dynafiash” principle in which special domeshaped, or “turbulator” pistons are used.

2 CONVERTIBLES AMONG ZEPHYRS

Six Body Types Included in 1938 Group, Announces A. C. Steger.

Two new convertibles, a sedan and

a coupe, are presented among the six body types which comprise the 1938 Lincoin-Zephyr group. In addition to the new convertibles, the line includes a sedan with four doors, a coupe-sedan with two doors, a three-passenger coupe and a town-limousine. A wide range of choice in colors in a new baked enamel finish is available, A. C. Steger, district manager of the Lincoln division of the Ford Motor Co. has announced. From front to rear bumper, the new cars display a new impression of metor car styl- RR ing. The stream lined front end Mir, Steger is closed except for two grille openings near the bottom. The *air-stream” treatment is carried out in the long hood, the tilt of the windshield and grgceful body contours. The fenders are massive. Headlamps are streamed into the front fenders, the combination tail and stop lamps nto the rear fenders. The license plate bracket is in the center of the rear deck door, Tasteful new fittings, wide, deeply cushioned seats and a general air of roominess characterize the interiors. The driver compartments have been enlarged. A new instrument panel, which includes a closed grille extending down to the floor, conceals radio and car heater installations and is flanked on either side by a glove compartment. Advances in performance, economy, safety, durability and style, gained through refinement of features, mark the two new passenger car series which Chevrolet is introducing. Both lines embody the revolutionary new “Tiptoe-matic” clutch combining more positive action with greater operating ease and adding to the safety, comfort and dura-

bility of the car.

The 1938 lines, declares N. A. Stuart, Indianapolis zone manager,

1937 models. Refinements extend to bodies, both interiors and exteriors, and to ii numerous units NA RLY of the chassis, iv" whose design, © however, re- 3 mains fundamentally unchanged. The power plant in | both series is the 85 -horse power highcompression valve - in - head six-cylinder engine. All models have Chevrolet's hydraulic brakes, all-silent, all-steel turret top bodies by Fisher and hypoid rear axle. On the Master

The panel and grille are finished in beige. Garnish moldings are in “Silver Glow” walnut finish. Seats are comfortable upholstered in broadcloth or cord. There is a soft-edge cushioned with sponge rubber on the back of the seat above the robe cord. Deeper arm rests are provided in rear compartments. Large luggage compartments are provided in all new body types. Additional luggage space is found back of the seat in the coupe and convertible coupe. Among the improvements in the chassis is the increased wheelbase, now 125 inches, three inches longer. Springbase is lengthened to 136 inches. The longer wheelbase tends

In conjunction with changes in the wheel house design, this makes possible two inches greater width through the rear seat of the car. EVERY SPARK SETS OFF A CYCLONE!

Rushing into the cylinder at speeds as high as 250 miles an hour, the fuel charge strikes the Turbulator built into the piston. Instantaneously it is converted into a tiny cyclone of terrific turbulence. The spark ashing into this cyclompression, fires a faster, cleaner, more furious explosion which drives piston down with almost 10% stronger power-push.

A SAFETY CUSHION ON EACH WHEEL!

Buick replaces the usual type spring with this special spring of stout coiled steel and big direct-acting Transport Type shock absorbers. Rigidly aligned by the Torque Tube, rear axle and wheels cannot twist or distort, cannot affect steering, greatly reducing danger from skids. No shackles, no grease points, no chatter, no premature rear tire wear.
