SAFETY SHIFT IS FEATURE OF 1938 PONTIACS

Silver Streak Design Retained in Both 8 and 6, Announces Cope.

Changes and refinements in appearance and body interiors mark the Pontiac six and eight for 1938. The featured mechanical development is the new remote gear shift called the “safety shift gear control.” It is optional on both six and eight at slight extra cost and is entirely mechanical in operation. Safety shift gear control is Pontiac 28 ; designed a n d culminates six years of engineering effort to get the conventional gear shift out of the center of the front compartment, The shift lever is located under t he steering wheel, while the same transmission unit is used that is provided for conventional shifting except for a different cover plate.

Retain Silver Streak

The new lines retain the distinetive Pontiac badge of the “Silver Streak” in refined form, announces L. N. Cope, factory district manager. This chromium grille sweeping up over the radiator and hood has characterized every Pontiac model since the 1935 series. Other outstanding 1938 developments include restyled front end, enlarged generator ample for every clectrical need, relocation of the battery beneath the hood for easier accessibility and greater cleanliness larger water pump, addition of a clutch helper spring, improved silent syncromesh transmission, complete new body interiors and a host of other improvements and refinements designed to increase the beauty and safety of this latest offering of the second largest producer in General Motors.

How It Works

The new unit consists of a short shift lever swinging about a shaft held parallel with the steering column, the control nesting under the steering wheel out of the way of passengers and within easy reach of the driver. Shift positions are the same as though the conventional shift lever were bent to the right or the transmission laid on its right side. In this position shift movements are exactly the same as at present except that the accustomed horizontal shift through neutral now becomes a vertical movement. Moving the shift handle up accomplishes the same selection as moving the conventional shift lever to the left, for in this position reverse or low may be engaged. Moving the handle down through neutral selects second or high gear,

Same Body Types Available

The same body types are available on both six and eight cylinder chassis; 3-passenger standard coupe, 5-passenger sport coupe and cabriolet, 6-passenger 2-door and 4-door sedans, 2-door and 4-door touring sedans, and convertible phaeton. Curb weight of the 4-door sedan is 3415 pounds and on the six and 3555 on the eight. With the six built on a 117-inch wheelbase and the eight on 122, the two chassis are powered by motors delivering 85 and 100-horsepower, respectively, and with piston d#placements of 223 and 249 cubic inches. Most striking in the new exterior appearance is the restyled front end mentioned above. The “Silver Streak” becomes the focal point of a new hood side grille and new radiator horizontal grille design which gives the impression of extreme power and beauty. Radiator ornaments are redesigned in the modernistic manner, and new polished die-cast shields conceal the head lamp bracket adjusting cavities. Each model carries a name plate at both the upper and lower parts of the vertical section of, the silver grille. Wheels and hub caps are new.

New Interiors On the eight, parking lamps have been tailored into the tops of the head lamps to form a harmonious unit. This model also boasts distinctive radiator ornament, lower radiator name plate and molding, as well as bumper ornaments and guards in keeping with the greater luxury of this model. Interiors are wholly new, as are exterior colors and combinations. The first impression one gets upon entering the car is that of a custom tailored body. Interior design, upholstery, hardware and instrument panels are new, and achieve the dual purpose of increasing the beauty and comfort of the car.

MORE RUBBER USED TO REDUCE SHOCKS

Easier, more comfortable steering that lessens the strain of driving for many hours at a time, has been secured for the new Chryslers through the introduction this year of rubber mountings which cushion the steering gear from the frame. Slight road shocks and vibrations that formerly reached and fatigued the driver's arms have been eliminated. Just as the Chrysler engines are mounted in rubber, so this resilient shock absorbing material now insulates the steering gear from the frame of the car. Up and down movements of the wheels and steering tie-rods do not affect the steering gear because there is no direct thrust on the pitman arm.

WINDSHIELD IS KEY TO CAR VENTILATION

A windshield which may be opened at the top is the key to a new method of ventilating an automobile. When the windshield is open, and the car is in motion, air is directed above the opening, resulting in an ejector action which withdraws stale air from the interior,

SPEED DESIGN MARKS GRAHAM

First Impression Gained From Side View Is That Car Is in Motion.

Graham enters the automobile show this year with a long, low, speedy design which critical preview audiences already have predicted will set new standards of beauty and safety for the industry. And accompanying the new shapeliness are numerous mechanical improvements which have as their object longer life and better performance. Graham designers have achieved an illusion of speed and length by the skillful use of contour lines, although the car is only one-half inch longer than the 1937 Supercharger “120.” The first impression obtained from a side view of the car is that it is in motion. From front to rear, the eye finds no interruption in the flowing lines which might detract from the general impression that the car is “going places.” The front fenders, in which head lamps are flush with the “leading” edge, seem to be leaning

grille as it rises to the long, flat, unbroken sweep of the hood. The hood, by the way, is the new one-piece style which lifts from the front, giving access to both sides of the motor at once. The side panels are easily removed when more working space is needed around the motor. The hood fastening is controlled by the radiator ornament, a graceful adaptation of the Knight's helmet motif, and the latch is trouble-

proof in that it cannot become accidentally unfastened.

But the engineers had more than beauty as their goal, as an examination of the chassis will reveal. Graham has standardized on a wheelbase of 120 inches for next year and, for the present at least, body types will be confined to a four-door sedan and a coupe. There are three series of cars in these two models, a Special with a 90-horsepower engine, a Super-

numerous items which are optional in the other models. Graham's Supercharger, introduced to the medium-price field three years ago and responsible for this car winning the famous Yosemite National Park Economy Run for two years in succession against competition of all makes, is made even more efficient this year with a change in carburetion.

Van Der Zee, Dodge Sales Chief, Cites Changes In Construction.

“Automobile Show time is here again, and to the thousands who will visit these exhibitions and to the additional hundreds of thou=sands of automobile owners who will learn of what is new in the automobile world by reading about it or by seeing the new cars in dealers’ showrooms or on the street Automobile Show time means merely the period that marks the appearance of new models—the annual lifting of the curtain on what the engineers and manufacturers have to offer for the ensuing year,” A. van Der Tee, general sales manager of Dodge, de clared today. “To us of the automobile industry, however, the real significance of the show season—this year, as in former years—is not that we are showing to the public, for the first time, models that are merely new but that they are both new and better. “They are cars that represent greater values than ever before, cars that offer more in comfort and beauty and safety—smoother riding qualities, easier handling, more efficient performance.”
